Openings: Jedediah Voltz – “Somewhere Small” @ Virgil Normal

Back in April, Virgil Normal in Los Angeles hosted a brief showing of miniature “tree” houses from Jedediah Voltz. His whimsical structures embedded in the branches of common household plants (such as succulents) featured a high level of detail to include tiny furniture, pots, rugs, and other accessories. As a creative outlet for his commercial prop making experience, the series of tiny domiciles is obviously a labor of love, something his audience appreciated leading to an almost sold out opening night. Openings: Curiot – “Warped Passage” @ Thinkspace Gallery

On May 28th, Thinkspace Gallery opened a new solo show by Favio Martinez aka Curiot, along with solo shows by James Bullough and UR New York. Openings: Greg Simkins – “Beyond Shadows” @ KP Projects // MKG & Launch LA

Last month, KP Projects // MKG in West Hollywood hosted the opening for the latest solo from Greg “Craola” Simkins (featured). Entitled Beyond Shadows, the new pieces continue the locally-based artist’s surreal explorations of hybrid creatures rendered in a vivid palette. Previews: Jim McKenzie – “Lost Magic” @ Copro Gallery

On June 4th, Copro Gallery in Los Angeles will be presenting the debut solo show from artist and animation commercial director Jim McKenzie. Although the sculptural hybrids from the New York-based artist has a whimsical aspect to them, there is also a darker side to his work. On June 18th, Edwin Ushiro (interviewed) will be opening a new solo show at Giant Robot 2 in Los Angeles. Just in time for summer, Capturing What Still Glimmers features nostalgic imagery from the artist’s youth growing up in Hawaii. Utilizing a unique process and technique, the locally-based painter’s work glows with an ethereal translucent quality that must be seen in person to be fully appreciated. Discuss this show here. Studio Visits: Greg Simkins – “Beyond Shadows” @ KP Projects // MKG & Launch LA

Leading up to his show opening tomorrow night at KP Projects // MKG, we had a chance to take a peek at Greg “Craola” Simkins (featured) prepping for the show in his studio. Entitled Beyond Shadows, the new solo will include detailed works focused on his surreal characters, some “drip script” pieces, and some new paintings of his favorite switchblade Stab E. Mack. Upcoming: Hush – “Allure” @ Corey Helford Gallery

The next artist to show at Corey Helford Gallery’s new space in downtown LA is British street artist Hush (interviewed). Known for his East meets West style mixed with some stylistic cues from the street, the man who hails from Newcastle will be opening his show entitled Allure on May 28th. Look for 24 new mixed media paintings as well as probably some limited editions when the fresh body of work is revealed. Discuss Hush here.

Upcoming: Paco Pomet – “Recent Paintings” @ Richard Heller Gallery

For his third solo with Richard Heller Gallery, Paco Pomet will be presenting some Recent Paintings that continue his now well known modus operandi. The Granada-based artist creates works of art that look like loosely rendered vintage photos and landscapes that have unusual color accents or delightful surreal elements that can be seen when examined more closely. The opening is scheduled for May 14th for those interested in the Los Angeles area.

Showing: Louise Bonnet – “Paintings” @ Mier Gallery

Mier Gallery in West Hollywood is currently showing the first solo exhibition of Los Angeles-based artist Louise Bonnet. The exhibition simply titled Paintings opened on April 23rd and will stay on view through June 4th. The show includes six large paintings and several drawings on paper showing Bonnet’s recognizable visual language and imagery. Her cartoon-like characters with no facial expressions feature exaggerated proportions of body parts that instead convey feelings of melancholy, nostalgia, and displacement.
