Previews: Femke Hiemstra – “Fiebertraum” @ Merry Karnowsky

Dutch artist Femke Hiemstra will be opening a solo show this Saturday, June 22nd, at the Merry Karnowsky Gallery in Los Angeles. The new body of work, collectively entitled Fiebertraum or Fever Dream, draws inspiration from near and far like song birds that came to visit her garden during the colder months and the Indian Holi Phagwa festival. MOCAtv recently released a new video featuring the Los Angeles-based RETNA (featured) spanning several projects put together in conjunction with the museum. The footage includes an interview with the graffiti artist as he talked about his two recent murals, The Falcon Before and After – 2013 and Para Mi Gente, Los Pintores de Nuestra Alma, painted at the Grand Ave Location for their 2013 Gala. Also discussed was his work with the Louis Vuitton Young Arts Program (see RETNA’s other collaborations with the fashion line here and here). Discuss RETNA here.

Tomorrow night in Beverly Hills (June 19th 6-8pm), the Lladró Boutique will be holding a release party for the Gary Baseman (interviewed) designed version of their Guest porcelain figure. Next Saturday night (June 22nd), the Copro Gallery in Los Angeles will be presenting a new show from Peter Chan. For his first solo with the gallery and in the United States, the Toronto-based artist has created a series of works collectively entitled Soliloquy, a fitting title considering the introspective contemplations he had while producing these paintings (see statement below). Earlier this month, Brendan Monroe (interviewed) opened his new solo show at the Richard Heller Gallery in Los Angeles. Entitled Melting Into the Floor, the new body of work includes paintings on paper and a number of sculptures in wood. Drawing from the name of the show, many of the pieces explore the transformation between liquids, gases, and solids – especially the crossing points at which the alteration occurs. A couple weekends ago, the Martha Otero Gallery presented all new works from Pedro Matos in his first Los Angeles solo exhibition. Entitled Building Castles Made of Sand, the showing featured a new series of oil paintings on canvas and azulejo panels, a traditional Portuguese medium of hand-painted, tin-glazed, ceramic tile work. Continuing to draw from his experience of working on the streets of Lisbon, Matos weaves layers, textures, patterns, figurative subjects, and typography into his pieces. Openings: Scott Campbell – “Things Get Better” @ OHWOW Gallery

Last night, Scott Campbell unveiled a new body of work in Los Angeles at OHWOW Gallery entitled Things Get Better. Mostly consisting of paintings of what he calls “Frankenguns,” jerry-rigged tattoo guns that he was able to make inside of jails in Mexico (with looser regulations than in the United States) and administer tattoos to inmates. This Saturday (May 25th) marks the return of Eishi Takaoka to Giant Robot 2 in Los Angeles for another solo showing. Entitled Waiting, the exhibition will feature the serene floating heads that the Japanese artist has become know for. Each sculpture comprises of carved wood painted with raw mineral pigments and although they display an outwardly calm façade, their bottled-up emotions manifest as outlandish formations that are often seen sprouting from each face.

Tomorrow night (May 23rd) at the OHWOW Gallery in Los Angeles, tattoo and fine artist Scott Campbell will be opening a new solo show entitled Things Get Better. The new series of ink paintings depict his “Frankenguns,” hand-made contraptions built inside prisons to administer tattoos to inmates. This culmination of a personal project he started two years ago took him to the inside of Mexican prisons with improvised tools, a true art form that contrasts with superficiality of the contemporary tattoo world.
