Preview: Scott Listfield & Jeff Gillette @ Gallery 1988 (Venice)

Later tonight, the Venice location for Gallery 1988 will be unveiling a two-person show from Scott Listfield and Jeff Gillette. The exhibition pairs Listfield’s astronaut pop culture-infused portraiture with Gillette’s postapocalyptic visions of the urban settings leading to an interesting look into the future perhaps from both artists. Openings: Victor Castillo – “Under Heavy Measures” @ Merry Karnowsky Gallery

On Saturday night, the Merry Karnowsky Gallery welcomed in Victor Castillo for his new solo show entitled Under Heavy Measures. The new body of work included pieces on paper and canvas, sketches, and some sculptures that look like they came straight out of his paintings including the LA-based artist’s signature red sausage noses (see video). Attendees were treated to vivid and troubled imagery juxtaposing the innocence of children and an illustrative style with dark subject matter fraught with ominous creatures, political overtones, and violence. Preview: Victor Castillo – “Under Heavy Measures” @ Merry Karnowsky

This Saturday night (February 2nd) the Merry Karnowsky Gallery in Los Angeles will be home to a new solo show from Victor Castillo. Under Heavy Measures will consist of paintings on paper & canvas, sculptures, and sketches from the locally-based artist all created in the deceptively innocent style of illustrations for children’s stories. Upcoming: “Something Wicked This Way Comes” @ Cella Gallery

Later next month, the Cella Gallery will be hosting a group show entitled Something Wicked This Way Comes featuring artists who have practice rendering the surreal and macabre. Curated by Stephanie Chefas, the roster includes Annie Owens, Christian Rex van Minnen, Christine Wu, Chrystal Chan, David Ball, Fulvio Di Piazza, Jana Brike, Jessica Ward, Judith Supine, and Michael Page (interviewed) – whose painting of some corporate types you see above. Following directly on from our studio visit with John Bocksel leading up to Curio‘s Sea Of Blasphemy group exhibition opening on 26th January, filmmaker Jarcob Arden McClure just finished this video profile of artist Bill McRight, who is also participating in the grouping along with Ben Venom, and Bonnie Brenda Scott. The video gives an interesting behind the scenes look into McRight’s studio as well as a history of how he came to concentrate his practice of making shanks and improvised weapons. Upcoming: Tim Biskup for “MAS: ATTACK” @ LA Mart

Tonight (January 26th) in Los Angeles, LA Mart (1933 S. Broadway) will be hosting a group exhibition entitled MAS: ATTACK (Mutual Appreciation Society). The one night event features a large roster of artists including Tim Biskup who will be contributing the pieces seen above including the 48″ x 48″ painting entitled Dawn which seem combines old and new techniques.
