POW! WOW! Hawaii ’17 / Showing: Exploring The New Contemporary Movement” @ Honolulu Museum of Art School

Showing in associated POW! WOW! Hawaii through the tomorrow at the Honolulu Museum of Art School is the 4th annual Exploring The New Contemporary Movement group exhibition (see 2016 & 2015 & 2014) curated by Thinkspace. Artists were asked to contribute 12 x 12″ pieces leading to a visually conforming display of works. Upcoming: Matzu // Tomokazu Matsuyama – “Oh Magic Night” @ HOCA Foundation

After a high profile showing at Harbour City Hong Kong in 2014 (covered), Tomokazu Matsuyama (interviewed) will be returning the the Asian city-state for an exhibition with the HOCA Foundation. Oh Magic Night, which sounds like o-maji-nai in Japanese, directly translated as good luck charm, will be a survey of the Brooklyn-based artist’s work expounding on themes of “mythological guardians, fictional tableaux and ornate abstraction.” Hosted at Shop B104 – 305, The Pulse (No. 28 Beach Road, Repulse Bay, Hong Kong) starting March 19, the show will include over 50 works including […]

Releases: Rod Luff – “Afterglow” Print

The People’s Print Shop recently released a new limited edition from Rod Luff entitled Afterglow. Available in a signed and numbered run of 30, the image from the Sydney-based artist is taken from his piece from the recent Moleskin V group show which he co-curated. Studio Visits: Greg Simkins – “Beyond Shadows” @ KP Projects // MKG & Launch LA

Leading up to his show opening tomorrow night at KP Projects // MKG, we had a chance to take a peek at Greg “Craola” Simkins (featured) prepping for the show in his studio. Entitled Beyond Shadows, the new solo will include detailed works focused on his surreal characters, some “drip script” pieces, and some new paintings of his favorite switchblade Stab E. Mack. Jeff Soto for Empellón Taqueria (New York)

Earlier this month, Jeff Soto (interviewed) painted (with the assistance of his brother and sister-in-law) an impressive two-wall mural at Empellón in New York. Invited in by one of his long-time fans and chef Alex Stupak (seen below) to infuse his surreal imagery onto the walls of his West Village outpost, the California native chose to highlight the rooster as well a group of pottery growing imagined plants and succulents. The artwork was part of a remodel of the taqueria is largely symbolic, with themes of family, life and death, and nature.
