Showing: “Reshaped Reality: 50 Years of Hyperrealistic Sculpture” @ Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall (Taipei)

Continuing its travel throughout the museums of the world, Reshaped Reality: 50 Years of Hyperrealistic Sculpture has now touched down at the Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall in Taiwan. Showing through September 22nd, the exhibition features hyperrealistic sculptures from a roster of internationally recognized artists like Patricia Piccinini, Ron Mueck, Kazuhiro Tsuji, and more. As referenced but the title, the artists explore the human form rendered in deceptively and disturbingly realistic detail but oftentimes with a surreal touch. Showing: Joakim Ojanen – “Island” @ Dio Horia

An exhibition entitled Island from Joakim Ojanen recently opened at Dio Horia in Mykonos featuring four oil paintings he created during his residency at the gallery as well as a group of ceramic sculptures crafted after his time on the Greek island at the artist’s studio in Stockholm. The character-based works loosely reference his experience on the island including the large centerpiece, situated in what looks like a cobbled Mykonian alley and featuring a smiling Greek amphora full of daisies. Upcoming: Lisa Ericson – “Islands” @ Antler Gallery

Tonight in Portland at Antler Gallery, Lisa Ericson will be opening a new show entitled Islands alongside some sculptural works from Crystal Morey. Building on concepts conceived in previous body of works (LA ’18 & PDX ’18), the locally-based artist returns with more acrylic on panel paintings that feature fauna and flora, entire ecosystems, balanced on the backs of different creatures. The science-based and surreal imagery from Ericson simultaneously brings to mind the global refugee crisis and environmental issues such as global warming. Discuss Lisa Ericson here.

Opening last week, Throw-ups at NANZUKA in Tokyo marks James Jarvis’ (interviewed) first solo showing in Japan in the last four years. Come July 20th, a beautiful show from Andrew Hem (interviewed) will close in Paris at Galerie Openspace. Fragmentz features the American artist’s dream-like imagery rendered in lush colors, a world full of natural landscapes and city scenes oftentimes inspired by his Cambodian heritage for his characters to inhabit. For his first time exhibiting in France, Hem prepared a series if 10 paintings, a selection of watercolors done on paper from his travel diaries, and a wall mural. Releases: Todd James – “Tank Pool Float”

Just in time for summer, Todd James has released one of his iconic characters as an inflatable for your pool time enjoyment. The Tank Pool Float, available through Case Studyo, comes in an edition of 200 and costs €302.50 (including VAT). Previews: Jacob Gagnon – “Dream World” @ Thinkspace

This Saturday night (June 29th), Thinkspace Gallery will unveiling a new selection of works from Jacub Gagnon (interviewed) in a show entitled Dream World. Combining flora and fauna from the natural world with objects and elements from the human world, the Canadian artist creates surreal amalgamations that usually work around clever wordplay (like the piece above called Dragon’s Fruit).
