Preview: Brian Despain – “Requiarium” @ Roq La Rue

Friday night, Brian Despain (interviewed) will be treating Seattle residents to his cadre of robots and their adventures. Despain is able to imbue his mechanical characters with emotional depth as they interact with companions from the natural world set against an often lush background. Despain’s “Requiarium” is set to open Nov 12th at Roq La Rue alongside John Brophy’s “Saints and Angels.” More preview images after the jump.

AM visited Jeremy Fish this past weekend in Laguna for the opening of “Weathering the Storm”, his first solo museum show. As you may well remember from our studio visit, Fish has created an entirely new body of work for this exhibit, featuring a variety of sizes and mediums. Jeff Soto (interviewed) recently sent us this timelapse video of his piece “The Sun Rises Again” that he painted for the Giant Robot Biennale this year. It was definitely one of the standout pieces from that exhibition, and we are happy to see that Jeff is continuing to paint these ambitious pieces as his work is really suited for the large scale (like on the streets here and here). Check out one he’s working on for Art Basel this year here.

In what looks to be a magical wedding deep in the forest, Mark Ryden and Marion Peck tied the knot amongst friend and family. With a beautiful setting and costumes that just seem appropriate, the artists made it official. We wish them all the happiness in the world and many years painting together…

Last night, Greg Simkins aka Craola (interviewed) opened his show “The Pearl Thief” at the LA location of Gallery 1988. One of the most detailed and imaginative artists when it comes to “drawing” with pencil and charcoal, Laurie Lipton is about to open a show today in Liverpool at the Novas Contemporary Urban Centre. Entitled “Homotoptia,” the show is named after Liverpool’s annual celebration of Queer Culture. We are looking forward to this new body of work as Lipton’s work has a interesting new industrial look to it. More after the jump.
