Showing: Joram Roukes – “Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness” @ B15 Gallery

Just this Friday night, Dutch painter Joram Roukes opened his solo show at the B15 Gallery in Copenhagen entitled Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness. Based thematically on the influential Smashing Pumpkins album of the same name, the series of stunning new paintings features surreal creatures formed with a piecemeal compilation of other scenes and components. This technique enables the former street artist to create pieces that have a dynamic feel to them and when accented with vibrant colors, it results in some of the most refined work we have seen from […]

Showing: Mark Dean Veca – “Year of the Snake” @ SiTE:LAB (ArtPrize)

The Los Angeles-based Mark Dean Veca (interviewed) recently traveled to Michigan to create an installation for this year’s ArtPrize competition. The site-specific immersive installation entitled Year of the Snake transforms the Grand Hall of the old Public Museum of Grand Rapids with his signature imagery. The concept behind the work featuring a printed vinyl floor and hand-painted walls is a riff on this year’s Chinese Zodiac and that fact that the space is actually going through a transformation, like the shedding of a snake’s skin. For those interested, head over here […]

Openings: Jeremiah Ketner – “Ideal World” @ myplasticheart

Last month, myplasticheart in New York hosted a solo show from Jeremiah Ketner (interviewed) entitled Ideal World. The new body of work featured the feel good imagery typically seen from the Chicago-based artist painted in bright colors. Ketner’s female and fairy-like characters frolic and play in a tranquil natural world full of flowers, vines, and gardens – certainly one artist’s interpretation of utopia. Discuss Jeremiah Ketner here. Discuss this show here.

There’s a level of calm and delicacy within the chaotic compositions, full of details that emerge and reveal themselves the further you look into Kauffman’s paintings. Studio Visit / Previews: Sail – “Dead Language” @ Roq La Rue

This author had the pleasure of interviewing Sail in 2012 for his personal blog, but a lot has changed for the Seattle based artist since then. Shortly after his personal website launched in late 2012, he caught the eye of Kirsten Anderson, owner and curator of Roq la Rue. He soon found his name on the artist list for the I’ll Love You Until the End of the World group show. His work was well received, and after ThreeA Publishing released his book in their GOYA series, […]
