Preview: Femke Hiemstra – “Let The Devil Wear Black” @ Roq La Rue

On Friday night, the Roq La Rue Gallery in Seattle will be presenting all new works from Femke Hiemstra (showing alongside Ryan Heshka). Let The Devil Wear Back will feature the Dutch artist’s mixed media paintings as well as black & white drawings that chronicle the stories of mysterious animals (like cats!) as well as come-to-life inanimate objects. These dark fairytale scenes are often rendered on found objects like books and boxes, further enhances each piece’s whimsy and “magical powers.” Discuss this show here.

Basel Week Miami ’12 / Preview: Scott Scheidly @ SCOPE / Spoke Art

Like the ArtPadSF in San Francisco earlier this year (covered), Scott Scheidly will be showing more works from his series of unusual portraits – this time at the SCOPE art fair in Miami (part of Basel Week Miami). The Orlando-based Schneidly will be one of the featured artists at the Spoke Art booth (along with Jessica Hess), so head over if you are in town to check out his tyrants, dictators, and other pop culture icons re-imagined in a different context. Openings: “LAX / HKG” @ Above Second Gallery

Last month, the  Above Second Gallery opened their latest show featuring a guest curator (also see AM’s turn in 2011) – Thinkspace. Entitled LAX / HKG, the group exhibition featured works imported from the Los Angeles new contemporary movement including Amy Sol, Audrey Kawasaki (above), Brian M. Later today, Stella Im Hultberg (interviewed) will be holding her annual studio sale (see 2010 & 2011) where small originals can be had for very reasonable prices. After executing the first phase of his revenge against Japanese bootleggers by taking those images, painting, and selling then for his show in Chicago (covered), Luke Chueh (interviewed) has traveled to Tokyo where he will have a chance to see these illegal productions in person. Basel Week Miami ’12 / Upcoming: Yoskay Yamamoto Installation @ PULSE

Those visiting the PULSE fair next week in Miami will have to keep their eyes our for an installation from the Los Angeles-based Yoskay Yamamoto (interviewed). The project made possible by LeBasse Projects and Perrier will be over 24′ long and consist of 120 new cast sculptures in the same vein as his do you remember me… installation for his solo in 2010.
