Highlights: ArtPadSF, San Francisco

San Francisco, last weekend, hosted a slew of fine art fairs around the city. One noteworthy fair was the inaugural edition of ArtPadSF (held at the legendary Phoenix Hotel in the Tenderloin), which focused mainly on Bay Area galleries that feature contemporary and emerging art. Each room of the hotel featured a different gallery’s display and the lounge played host to panel discussions on art. Some of the galleries that had a room at the fair included: White Walls, Gallery Anno Domani, 111 Minna, Spoke […]

Openings: Dave MacDowell – “Lowbrow Love Letter” @ Thinkspace

Last month, besides hosting Jacub Gagnon’s (interviewed) joint show with Yosuke Ueno, Elements and Oddities (covered), Thinkspace also presented the work of master satirist Dave MacDowell.  As he intimated to us in an interview before the show opened, the new body of work, Lowbrow Love Letter was a lighthearted riff on the entire movement’s imagery and artists (you can see his Mark Ryden and Chet Zar inspired paintings above). The show has now closed but you can take a look at more opening shots after the jump…

Openings: Mark Dean Veca – C.O.L.A. Exhibition @ LAMAG

Yesterday, on a beautiful sunny afternoon at Barnsdall Park in East Hollywood, the 2011 City of Los Angeles (C.O.L.A.) Individual Artist Fellows showed off their recent work at the LA Municipal Art Gallery. One of those mid-career artists represented is none other than Mark Dean Veca (interviewed), who brought along three large-scale paintings utilizing his signature renditions of “Toile de Jouy” patterns. Of course, his subjects of choice include some of his favorite pop icons – familiar food mascots Tony the Tiger, Charlie the Tuna, […]

Preview: Art HK’11 – James Jean @ Martha Otero

Continuing our survey of the upcoming Hong Kong International Art Fair, we turn our attention to the booth of Martha Otero. Coming straight off his March exhibition with the Los Angeles gallery, it looks like James Jean (featured) will be heading to the Far East to attend Asia’s preeminent art fair. When the doors open on this Thursday, May 26th, this four panel piece entitled Lovers will be headlining booth 3G09 along with other originals and limited editions. More preview images of some of the […]

Release: Mark Dean Veca – The Hundreds Skate Deck & Shoe

Continuing his collaboration with The Hundreds, Mark Dean Veca (interviewed) will be releasing a skate deck and kicks (Johnson Mid) featuring his signature “Toile de Jouy” abstractions. The shoe’s pattern is based on the image above which is also chock full of pop references like Hank Williams, Franz Kline, Ed Ruscha’s Hollywood Sign, Lil’ Annie Fannie, and Green Eggs and Ham. There are more images of the shoes, skateboards, and art work after the jump for those interested. Also, for those in LA, Mark will […]

Preview: Mars-1 – “Afterglow” @ Jonathan LeVine Gallery

If you are in New York this weekend, you don’t want to miss Afterglow, Mars-1’s (featured) latest body of work slated for a Thursday night opening at Jonathan LeVine. Staring at his detailed paintings always transports AM through his mind’s eye to strange alien civilizations and otherworldly landscapes.  We suggest you make time to do the same. A process video of Mars painting a work, as well as some further preview images after the jump.

Jessica Harrison – “Broken” @ Jealous Gallery

A show that closed just last weekend at the Jealous Gallery in London was a collection of sculptures that might not be for the faint of heart. Broken (previewed), from Jessica Harrison, is comprised of a series of classic delicate figurines common in the UK but with a gory twist.  For this particular line of work from the multi-talented artist, the dancing ladies don’t let a little disembowelment or unroofing of their brains get in the way of their fun, seemingly oblivious to the various mutilations […]

Openings: Clayton Brothers – “Inside Out” @ Pasadena Museum of California Art

A couple of nights ago, we headed over to the Pasadena Museum of California Art (PMCA) to check out two show openings.  One was Street Cred (covered), and the other was Inside Out from the renowned Clayton Brothers (featured). If you remember, last September, Christian and Rob presented an exhibition with the same title at the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art (MMoCA), so this is the second showing for this retrospective body of work. We didn’t have the opportunity to attend that show in Wisconsin, but […]

Last Sunday, AM attended the screening and Q+A for Kenny Scharf: More, Newer, Better, Nower, Funner, as part of a series of short films at the Levis Film Workshop, each based on an artist in the Art in the Streets exhibition. The footage includes Scharf on day and night time spray painting excursions, as well the creation of his installation for the historic MOCA show. The short film is directed by Nathan Meier and Kenny’s daughter, Malia Scharf, who are collaborating on a feature length documentary […]
