Openings: Audrey Kawasaki – “Hajimari – a prelude” @ Jonathan LeVine Gallery

When hype is built up, rarely does the show ever meet the expectations. Once in a blue moon does one actually surpass the expectations – which is exactly what this show did. Audrey Kawasaki opened up her much anticipated body of work “Hajimari – a prelude” (previewed) at Jonathan LeVine Gallery last weekend in New York City. The sold-out show drew a max capacity crowd that overflowed from the packed gallery space into the adjacent hallways. There were three lines going the whole night – one to get […]

Preview: Basel Week Miami ’09 – Wynwood Walls

AM swung by Deitch Project’s Wynwood Walls early yesterday to check out the massive mural installation, still in progress. Upon arriving at the complex, we were greeted by Martha Cooper (interviewed) who was busy taking shots of Futura, Shepard Fairey (featured), Os Gemeos and Kenny Scharf as they were busy installing their massive murals. With additional pieces by Aiko, Barry McGee and Swoon (interviewed), expect Wynwood Walls to present an impressive showing later this evening. More pictures after the jump.

Openings: Crazy 4 Cult 3D @ Gallery 1988 LA

AM had the pleasure of attending the opening of Crazy 4 Cult 3D show at Gallery 1988 (LA) a couple weeks ago. The 3rd installment of the wildly popular group show again brought together some of our favorite artists to reinterpret some of the most addictive cult films of all time. Again, we saw the perennial favorites such as The Professional, Edward Scissorhands, Office Space and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. But what we enjoyed were some new cult films such as The Jerk, Never […]

Openings: “Monster?” @ Copro Gallery

Last night, the “Monster?” group show (previewed) curated by Travis Louie (interviewed), opened at Copro Gallery in Santa Monica to a full house of monster lovers. They weren’t disappointed as artists took creative means to paint and sculpt their versions of of the theme, all the way from hideous vampires and Frankenstein to Charlie Brown and childhood piano teachers. Travis also put together a nice mix of well known artists in the scene and some newcomers. Take a look at all the pics after the […]

Teaser: Crazy 4 Cult III @ Gallery 1988 (LA)

It’s always interesting to see artists step out of their comfort zone and create a piece for theme shows.  Constrained by the subject matter, one needs to find a way to fit into the show, yet maintain your own style so that your work is recognizable as your own.  Ana Bagayan was successful on all counts with this piece (creative process on her blog) for this year’s Crazy 4 Cult show at Gallery 1988 (LA).  The third installment of this hugely successful show is set […]

Releases: Naoto Hattori Mini-Paintings

If you took our earlier suggestion to add yourself to Naoto Hattori’s mailing list, you would have seen this painting in the recent batch of mini-paintings he released.  Although Hattori is usually recognized for his paintings of psychedelic influenced figments of his imagination, there is a softer side to his work – hauntingly beautiful females often painted in this statuesque texture. Measuring only 4 x 5 inches, this a perfect example of how much detail he puts into each work. Check out some of the […]

Preview: Matthew Feyld “Untitled (New Works)” & David MacDowell “Sins of Atticus Finch” @ Thinkspace Gallery

A unexpected pairing of artists will be opening their show this Friday the 13th at Thinkspace Gallery in the Silverlake District. Canadian artist Matthew Feyld (interview by sourharvest) will be presenting a new body of work along with David MacDowell with his debut solo show. We like Feyld’s clean lines, colors and his strange cast of charaters. MacDowell’s work is like satiric political cartoons on steroids filled with caricatures of famous celebrities in unlikely but often hilarious situations. More preview pics after the jump.

Preview/Interview: David B. Smith Gallery @ Art Basel Miami 2008

David B. Smith Gallery or the gallery formerly known as Limited Addiction is showcasing three of their artists this year at Art Basel (Miami) – Josh Keyes, Jason Thielke, and Gregory Euclide. The exhibit will be at the Aqua Wynwood this year starting November 4th. These artists all have their distinctive styles that we like: Keyes with his “cubism” and ecological themes, Thielke with his architectural interpretations of the human form, and Euclide with his multi-layered landscapes… David has kindly sent us some preview images from […]

Kaws x Kanye West

Artists collaborating on album covers is not a new phenomenom, but here is an interesting one from Kanye West that was done by Kaws. This one apparently is only for the iTunes release.  If this is true, then the only place you would see the album cover would be in your Ipod or music players.  Shows what a powerhouse iTunes and downloads have become if money is spent exclusively for the online release.  Not sure why Kanye wouldn’t use the same cover for the hard […]

Openings: The Drawing Room @ Thinkspace

Last night’s show “The Drawing Room” (previewed) at Thinkspace opened with a tremendous showing by art fans. The long line snaked outside from the beginning to end with the gallery packed to maximum capacity. Not only were the fans there to see Audrey Kawasaki (curator) & her work, they were there for the many other talented artists that participated in the show. Photos after the jump.
