Coming up on November 7th, James Jean (interviewed) will be opening a solo show in Tokyo at the Hidari Zingaro Gallery. Curated by Takashi Murakami, the exhibition will be entitled Zugzwang, a German chess term that describes when you need to move, but you don’t want to because of the terrible conditions and that fact that it might make things worse. Releases: Luke Chueh / 1xRUN – “Graffiti” Print

Another artist participating in this year’s Murals In The Market in Detroit has released a print in association with the event. Luke Chueh’s (interviewed) contribution through 1xRUN is entitled Graffiti, a tongue-in-cheek image based on a painting from 2008 entitled Graffiti (I Don’t Do…). On October 10th, Matt Dangler (interviewed) will be opening a new solo at Copro Gallery, the site of his showing in Los Angeles in 2012 (covered). Entitled Sanctify, the title is perhaps a hint at some of the heavier topics that the gifted painter will be exploring with his surreal vision. On October 2nd, Slow Culture in Los Angeles will be presenting new works from Mel Kadel in a show entitled Sky’s Eyes. Known for her folk art inspired paintings featuring her recognizable female characters along with what must be penchant for patterns, the American artist has prepared at least 100 new pieces, which you can see stacked up in the video below. With this being the last week of the Invisible College group exhibition at the Fort Wayne Museum of Art, now would be a good time for a recap. Co-curated by Andrew and Shawn Hosner of Los Angeles’ Thinkspace Gallery and Josef Zimmerman from the museum, the title references the fact that many of the artists on the roster didn’t take a traditional art education path to where their careers are now. For its inaugural exhibition opening on September 25th, Chandran Gallery has chosen to show all new works from Richard Colman collectively entitled Faces, Figures, Places and Things. Showing: Steven Harrington – “Wavy Days” @ Colette

At the end of last month, colette in Paris opened a show from Steven Harrington entitled Wavy Days. The selection of recent paintings, prints, drawings, and sculpture were a therapeutic means for the American artist to deal with his struggles with anxiety, a channelling of that worrisome energy into playful cartoons and humor. Harrington also painted a mural at the store of two interlocking palm trees, a motif that can be seen throughout the new body of work. Discuss Steven Harrington here.

Streets: Mark Dean Veca – “Pony Show” / SiTE:LAB

As one of the selected artists for the Rumsey St. Project, Mark Dean Veca (interviewed) was recently invited into Michigan to create a site-specific installation. Habitat for Humanity of Kent County has offered SiTE:LAB the use of nearly three acres of land in Grand Rapids’ Roosevelt Park neighborhood where they invited local and international artists in to create works in response to the vacant land and structures. On October 17th, Offering from Martin Wittfooth (interviewed) will be opening at Jonathan LeVine Gallery in New York (529 West 20th Street). The exhibition will feature all new paintings, including this 73″ x 100″ beast of piece seen above entitled Rainsong. We love the new burst of color seen in this new imagery and can’t wait to see what else he has planned.
