Studio Visits: Brendan Monroe – “Morphology” @ Heath Ceramics (San Francisco)

Last week, AM had the opportunity to visit Heath Ceramics in San Francisco where Brendan Monroe (interviewed) was hard at work in the upstairs workshop on an upcoming show. Opening September 25th in the ceramics studio and store’s Bay Area Boiler Room, Morphology will reveal months of work the Oakland-based artist has put in testing his limits with larger pieces, carefully choosing glazes, and bringing to life (in three dimensions) concepts and elements of his visual language. Releases: Cleon Peterson Sculptural Editions

In association with his upcoming show in Detroit, Cleon Peterson has released a series of sculptural editions for fans who want to see his brutal imagery taken to the third dimension. The three offered sculpts come in an edition of ten in three different colorways (black, white, and gold), mirroring the palette of the provocative artist’s paintings. Upcoming: Dan Quintana – “Diffused” @ Hashimoto Contemporary

On this Saturday, August 29th, Hashimoto Contemporary in San Francisco will welcome in painter Dan Quintana for a new solo show. Diffused will feature almost a dozen new oil paintings and several charcoal drawings on paper, ghostly and surreal portraiture that show off the Los Angeles-based artist’s eye for detail as well his exploration of some more abstract elements. Upcoming: Mars-1 Sculptures @ Burning Man

Taking his bronze sculptures to the next level, Mars-1 (featured) has prepped three massive new pieces for this year’s Burning Man. The eclectic week-long annual event in Northern Arizona has seen the San Francisco-based artist’s organic imagery before (see 2010), but nothing in three dimensions. Banksy – “Dismaland” @ Tropicana (Weston Super Mare – UK), The Galleries

Along with main attractions (covered) of the fairground such as the game of tipping an anvil with a ping pong ball, sculptures and installations by Banksy scattered around the site, Dismaland has a large art gallery. James Jean x Momofuku Commission

After painting a mural last month for POW! WOW! Long Beach (covered), James Jean (interviewed) has started work on a new project. Utilizing large panels, the gifted painter looks to be prepping a large installation for friend and chef David Chang’s Momofuku restaurant group. The name can be loosely translated to “lucky peach” which explains why Jean used the peach as his focus for the commissioned works. Releases: Josh Keyes – “A Whole New World” Print

On August 25th, Josh Keyes (interviewed) will be making new print available through the Antler Gallery website at 11 am PDT and cost $275. The signed and numbered edition is slated for a run of 200 with the measurements at a paper size of 18″x34″ and image size of 15.5″x30.5″. A percentage from the sale of each print will be donated to Big Cats Initiative.
