Releases: Josh Keyes – “Phantom” Print

Tomorrow (November 14th) at 10am PST, Josh Keyes (interviewed) will be releasing a new print through Modern Eden entitled Phantom. The image is taken from a painting Keyes contributed to a current group show at the gallery in San Francisco and features a surreal scene with a shark swimming through a flooded forest, a reference to the dangers of global warming that is often seen in his work. After a first look at the inaugural ComplexCon, held at the Long Beach Convention Center, we now will focus in on a few things that caught our eye. Showing concurrently with Audrey Kawasaki’s solo tonight at Thinkspace will be Stella Im Hultberg’s (interviewed) Hollow Resonance in the Culver City gallery’s project room. Hultberg’s new body of work include both acrylic on wood paintings as well as some looser pieces combining ink, watercolor, acrylic, and colored pencils. Expanding on her use of flowers in her compositions of late, the Portland-based artist has surrounded her pensive women with a bountiful supply of blooms and petals. Saturday night (November 12th) in Culver City, Audrey Kawasaki (interviewed) will be opening a new solo show at Thinkspace Gallery entitled Interlude. The new paintings feature a bolder yet still muted palette along with a more erotically-charged narrative for her beautifully rendered female characters. An expert at coaxing her ethereal muses out from the wood grain with her oil paints, the locally-based artist has assembled a stunning collection of vulnerable yet provocative female subjects for her fans in Los Angeles. Three months since its debut at the Seattle Art Fair (covered), the Juxtapoz x Superflat group show co-curated by Juxtapoz editor, Evan Pricco and Takashi Murakami opened on the November 5th at the Vancouver Art Gallery. Staying on view until February 5th, the programming included a mixture of talks, lectures, tours, and special guests.
