Those who followed our coverage of Baby Tattooville last year probably remember one of the prized possessions attendees received during the event – a plate designed by Mark Ryden (interviewed). Featuring his iconic imagery, the “Surrealist Plate” was used during the special dinner prepared for the Surrealistic Ball (covered) he hosted with Marion Peck on the final night. Porterhouse has now made this collectible plate available starting on 8 am on February 12th for $250. Details can be found here. Discuss Mark Ryden here.
Last week, the Paul Kasmin Gallery (293 Tenth Avenue location) unveiled a new solo from Mark Ryden featuring his first-ever bronze sculpture, eight new paintings, drawings, color studies, and a new porcelain edition. As he mentioned in our recent interview, the theme of his exhibition could be described as “the soul confronting its physical form,” with the Dodecahedron symbolizing a bridge between the physical world and the intangible realm. Stop by for a look if you can, the new works are exquisite, especially his largest painting to date (seen above). Discuss this show here. […]

On November 30th (8am PST), Porterhouse will be releasing a new lithographic poster from Mark Ryden entitled Aurora. The stunning image is taken from a 9 feet tall painting that the Los Angeles-based artist has prepared for his upcoming show in New York and is his biggest piece to date. Produced in a run of 500 and sized at 39″ x 21.25″, the edition will cost $500 and be available here at the appropriate time. Discuss Mark Ryden here.
Continuing his longstanding collaboration with Porterhouse, Mark Ryden recently released the Lover’s Eye Brooch through their webstore. A similar item was given away at the Surrealist Ball during Baby Tattooville, with that prize being an original and this brooch being what looks to be an open edition. Priced at $99, the collectible comes with a black, foil stamped box with a certificate of authenticity. Head over here if you are interested. Discuss Mark Ryden here.
While attending this year’s Baby Tattooville, we heard the exciting news from Mark Ryden himself of his imminent return to the New York art scene with a new solo. Dodecahedron is scheduled to open on December 10th at Paul Kasmin Gallery (293 Tenth Avenue location), the site of the Los Angeles-based artist’s showing in NYC in 2010 (covered). The title of the exhibition, teaser images seen in this article, and a previous sculptural edition from Ryden can gives us perhaps some clues into what we will see […]
Our last piece of business to close out our coverage of this year’s Baby Tattooville is to show you the glorious sight that greeted attendees at brunch on Sunday, the morning after the once-in-a-lifetime experience of the Surrealist Ball hosted by Mark Ryden and Marion Peck. Lined up neatly on tables at the front of the room were original monochromatic paintings from Ryden that were used for the art on the special plate (seen right below) used by guests the night before at the event. Each little original was given […]
On Saturday night, attendees of this year’s Baby Tattooville at Riverside’s Mission Inn witnessed something that they will not soon forget for a very long time. The highlight of the annual art retreat (although this year’s was the last) was a Surrealist Ball hosted by none other than Mark Ryden and Marion Peck. The two artists along with friends Anthony Ausgang, Sas Christian, Olivia De Berardinis, Ron English, Camille Rose Garcia, Bosko Hrnjak, KRK Ryden, and Isabel Samaras got in full costumes along with the guests and settled in for a […]
Every year at Baby Tattooville, one of the most intriguing and fun events is the continuously ongoing “Art Jam.” For 2015, participating artists Anthony Ausgang, Sas Christian, Olivia De Berardinis, Ron English, Camille Rose Garcia, Bosko Hrnjak, Marion Peck, KRK Ryden, Mark Ryden, and Isabel Samaras decided to go with a black, white, and gray palette to create a surreal collaborative masterpiece. This will then be reproduced as a print overnight by Prints On Wood so that attendees can take a copy home with them. Discuss this year’s Baby Tattooville here.
