We recently had the opportunity to stop by for a look at the long awaited solo from Mark Ryden at the new Kohn Gallery location in Los Angeles. Entitled The Gay 90s: West (see the East showing in 2010), the exhibition included stunning new paintings from the master of his field featuring some of his most iconic imagery as well as his largest work to date (seen above). Rounding out the show were a series of drawings / studies, sculptural works, some important older pieces, and an intricate […]

The year was 1994, Pulp Fiction was ruling the box office, The Beastie Boys were blasting Sabotage and a group of artists out in sunny California were brainstorming on how to start a Kustom Kulture magazine, that (unbeknownst to them) would eventually go on to be the most widely distributed and influential art magazine in the world. Famed painter Robert Williams (originally from Albuquerque, New Mexico) was riding a California wave, while collaborator, Fausto Vitello, was ripping with his Thrasher Magazine success, and with some key […]
This Saturday, May 3rd, Kohn Gallery’s amazing new space will be hosting Mark Ryden’s long awaited West Coast continuation of his Gay 90s series of works that started back in 2010 in New York (covered). Rounding out the show will be something that will prove to be quite popular, an intricate motorized diorama […]

Last week when AM stopped by the LA Art Show, we made sure to pay a visit to the special Littletopia section curated by Red Truck Gallery. Participants included galleries like Sloan Fine Art, Breeze Block, La Luz de Jesus, Last Rites, Roq La Rue, Spoke Art, Thinkspace, and Varnish Fine Art. Take a look at some more photos below… Discuss this show here.
AM has been to the offices of Mark Parker before as well as talked to many artists that he has commissioned in the past so we can attest to the epicness of his art collection. Obscura Magazine recently released some photos they took in the Nike CEO’s new workspace where we spy the works of artists like Mark Ryden, Dalek, Kris Kuksi, Riusuke Fukahori, Alex Gross and more. We know this is just the tip of the iceberg in terms of his collection so hopefully there will […]
What better way to ring in the holidays than with one of your favorite artists – Mark Ryden. Like his signing in New York from earlier this year, the low brow luminary will be autographing two of his recent monographs at the Taschen store in Los Angeles (Farmer’s Market location, December 23rd, 7-9pm, RSVP: [email protected]) . The newer of the two, The Gay 90s, published by Rizzoli, illustrates the works included Ryden’s 2010 exhibition The Gay 90s: Old Thyme Art Show at Paul Kasmin Gallery (covered) while Pinxit by Taschen is a more comprehensive overview of […]
It’s been quite a while since our last Rewind feature, so it’s high time we bring you some videos. Starting things off is an explicit new music video from Tyler, The Creator entitled Tamale. If you recognize the scene from 0:48 – 1:02, it’s because it is a scene based of a Mark Ryden painting who also designed the cover for his new album – Wolf. Other notable videos: An interview with Anthony Lister at Wynwood Miami last May. ROA, Phlegm and others recreate famous Baroque paintings. RuPaul drives […]
