Openings: “MiXTAPE LA” @ Lebasse Projects (Chinatown)

Last night, the Chinatown location of LeBasse Projects hosted Mixtape Los Angeles, a group show curated by by Jessicka Adams and Brian Wakil of Dark Dark Science with part of the proceeds going to Downtown Dog Rescue and Stray Cat Alliance. Twenty four artists created pieces that explored “the effect of music on the process of creation” including Camille Rose Garcia, Elizabeth McGrath, Gary Baseman, Marion Peck, Mark Ryden, Matthew Bone, Melissa Haslam, Tara McPherson, Tim Biskup and more. This Saturday night, March 24th, the Copro Gallery in Santa Monica will play host to a group exhibition celebrating 18 years of Juxtapoz goodness. Last week in Los Angeles at Taschen Books, Mark Ryden held a signing for his comprehensive publication – Pinxit. As we witnessed during the Art Basel Miami release party (here), this is the “bible” for collectors of the renowned low brow artist’s work as its 366 pages Ryden’s 20 year career and art like no other book can. Tonight in Los Angeles at Taschen, fans of Mark Ryden will have a chance to check out his newest book in person as well as get it signed by the man himself. The impressive publication, Pinxit, is a comprehensive 366 page survey of Ryden’s 20 year career and is currently available as the Collector’s Edition of 1,000 ($1000). Last night, AM attended the release party for Mark Ryden x Taschen Books. The Basel Week event was held at the Soho House Miami and gave us a first look at their newly released book Pinxit which contains a comprehensive survey of Mr. Ryden’s illustrious 20 year career (previewed here). Today marks the release by Taschen of Mark Ryden’s Pinxit (the title is a playful references to both the preponderance of pink in his work and the Latin word meaning “he painted this,” which artists like Ingres and Rubens once appended after their signatures according to Erratic Phenomena). With so much eye candy at the main fair, we had to split out photos into two helpings. Headlining this second set are these clusters from Bay Area legend Barry McGee at the Cheim & Read booth featuring some abstract representations of spray cans arranged in a new way with some novel patterns. Other strong pieces seen were a unique piece from Mark Ryden utilizing a new technique, an oil from Lisa Yuskavage, various shiny objects from Anish Kapoor, and much more. See it all […]
