This Saturday night (June 27th), alongside Jeff Soto’s exhibition in the main space, Masakatsu Sashie will be presenting a set of new paintings collectively entitled Blind Box. Last weekend, the Oakland Museum of California opened a new exhibition, entitled SuperAwesome: Art and Giant Robot, celebrating the 20th anniversary of the art and culture magazine Giant Robot. Along with a diverse selection of GR branded paraphenalia and publications, artists who have been involved with them over the years contributed original artwork as well as some wall murals. A couple weeks ago, we visited Giant Robot 2 in West LA to check out the 20 Years Art X Mags Exhibition. Openings: Masakatsu Sashie – “Coacervate” @ Jonathan LeVine

Last month, we stopped by the Jonathan LeVine Gallery to check out a new solo show from Masakatsu Sashie (featured). Included in the exhibition entitled Coacervate (Latin for “to assemble together or cluster”) of course were different permutations of the fan-favorite globes created out of buildings, appliances, vending machines, and other urban man-made elements, but also seen was an impressive sculptural representation (seen above) of the Japanese artist’s signature imagery. Studio Visits: Masakatsu Sashie – “Coacervate” @ Jonathan LeVine

Next week, Masakatsu Sashie makes his New York debut with an exhibition at Jonathan LeVine Gallery. For now, we’ll bring you an inside look Sashie’s studio as he prepares for this show. From the looks of things it appears he will bring back his urban spheres and display the interesting perspectives on a society filled with modernism and consumerism. Another booth AM stops by whenever we are at art fairs the Tokyo-based Mizuma Gallery. Not only do they represent one of our favorite artists, Masakatsu Sashie and his entrancing orbs of futuristic and post-apocalyptic goodness as well as the talents of Akino Kondoh, but their roster of artists always includes much of the up-and-coming talent from Japan. A new exhibition from Masakatsu Sashie recently opened up at the Mizuma Gallery in Tokyo featuring five new works from the Japanese artist. The title of the show, Invisible Hand, is taken from Adam Smith’s The Wealth of Nations and is a term used to describe the self-regulating nature of the marketplace into which, by trying to maximize their own gains, individual ambition benefits society. Last showing a striking, large scale painting at Art HK back in May, Japanese contemporary artist Masakatsu Sashie is this time participating in a group exhibition in his home country.
