Showing: Jonathan Yeo – “Portraits” @ The Lowry

For those who missed Jonathan Yeo’s exhibition (covered) at the National Portrait Gallery in London, you may want to head north to The Lowry in Manchester. Portraits sees the British artist’s work travel up for another museum showing, featuring many of his most famous subjects including Kevin Spacey, Damien Hirst, Helena Bonham Carter, George Bush (cast in one of Yeo’s porn-infused collages), and others. Opening very soon (April 16th) at the ICA’s Lower Gallery in London is Tauba Auerbach’s first solo exhibition in the UK entitled The New Ambidextrous Universe. Consisting of seven all new pieces, the selection of work on display highlights the New York-based artist’s versatility in materials and mediums as well as her mathematical and structured approach to art making. From the patterns used to colors chosen to the dichotomy of symmetry and asymmetry, the genius of Auerbach’s work is how it creates beauty from the scientific principles she seeks to harness. Openings: Ai Weiwei – “Evidence” @ Martin Gropius-Bau

Ai Weiwei’s largest show to date, Evidence, has just opened at Martin Gropius-Bau, Berlin. The exhibition features new works that have been specifically designed for the exhibition or have never been shown in Germany. The show references some of the artist’s most well-known work, and his widely known experiences as an activist. Aaron Li-Hill – “Here Now” @ Portsmouth Museum of Art

A couple weekends ago, the Portsmouth Museum of Art hosted a two day only event entitled Here Now. The showcase featured the work of Aaron Li-Hill and Judith Ann Braun, who both produced site specific installations. For his part, the New York-based Li-Hill created one of his kinetic fencer murals, augmented by a loosely constructed scaffold of material. From our recent coverage of a showing at GR2, you already know that this is the 20 year anniversary of art and culture magazine Giant Robot. SuperAwesome: Art and Giant Robot at the Oakland Museum of California, opening on April 19th, continues the celebration with a group show featuring artists Ako Castuera, Sean Chao, Luke Chueh, Hamburger Eyes, Andrew Hem, James Jean, kozyndan, Masakatsu Sashie, Shizu Saldamando, Rob Sato, Amy Sol, Deth P Sun, Adrian Tomine, and David Choe, seen above painting a large mural. Coming up on April 11th, the Brooklyn Museum will be presenting a new large-scale installation from Swoon (interviewed), whom we just visited in studio earlier this year. Entitled Submerged Motherlands, the epic site-specific creation will be housed in the Iris and B. KAWS aka Brian Donnelly just opened his big European museum exhibition, curated by Fernando Francés, at CAC Malaga. On April 16th, the ICA in London will be presenting the first solo exhibition in the UK from the transcendent Tauba Auerbach. Entitled The New Ambidextrous Universe, the show will feature a diverse selection of works from the versatile artist including sculpture, photography, painting, weaving and book design. In particular, we are interested in her newly created works that “take as their starting point the scientific principles of symmetry and reflection as a means to hint at an alternate, mirror universe.” Discuss Tauba Auerbach here.

Releases: Shepard Fairey – “Ai Weiwei” Print

It looks like Shepard Fairey (featured) has created a new print as a tribute to Ai Weiwei ahead of the Chinese artist’s show opening soon at the Brooklyn Museum. The portrait is created with Shep’s signature style and features a gash on the activist-artist’s scalp alluding to his time in the Chinese police’s hands back in 2010.
