Chinese artist Cai Guo-Qiang, who recently orchestrated the New Year’s fireworks for Taipei, recently turned his attention to a different part of the world. His exhibition Resplandor y Soledad or Splendor and Solitude is currently showing at the Museo Universitario Arte Contemporáneo in Mexico City (runs through March 20th), his first solo in Latin America. Last Fall, AM caught an excellent exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum. The show entitled Andy Warhol: The Last Decade was an epic collection culled from the last 10 years of the famed artist’s illustrious career. The survey included almost 50 large scale works that demonstrated the newer styles which Andy Warhol incorporated into his already diverse repertoire in the latter part of his life. Last December, Brooklyn-based Elbow-Toe (interviewed) took his wonderful “cut paper paintings” to the Warrington Museum in the UK. Due Date, billed to be his first solo showing across the pond, explores his “preconceived notions of parenthood and the opportunities for growth that come through that process.” Featuring a set of images on panels and a set of images on paper, each series provides a contrast between staged environments and stark isolation. Google Art Project

In another sign that Google is taking over the world, they launched the Google Art Project today. Using technology similar to their “street view” feature on Google Maps, users can take a virtual tour of art institutions around the world like the MoMA (NY), Palace of Versailles, National Gallery (London), the Tate, and more. Openings: George Condo – “Mental States” @ New Museum

On Tuesday night AM attended the private opening of Mental States at the New Museum in New York. The exhibition is the first major US survey of works by George Condo with a over 80 paintings and sculptures spanning 1982 to current day by the adventurous and imaginative artist. Utilizing two floors of the spacious museum, Condo’s work was separated into multiple areas. Broad Musuem Design Revealed

The much talked about Broad Museum finally has an architectural design. This honeycombed building with a projected cost of $130 million is the brainchild of Diller, Scofidio + Renfro, a New York-based firm, and will feature 114,000 square feet of space spread over three stories. We will be definitely be looking forward to checking this and Eli Broad’s collection out when it opens in downtown LA. Via La Times.

We wanted to share this documentary we recently watched put out by the Tate Modern on Ai Weiwei’s Sunflower Seeds installation (covered). Hosted at the Turbine Hall and part of the Unilever Series of commissions for the museum, the impressive project from the Chinese artist and dissident took two and half years to complete and involved over 1600 artisans handcrafting 100 million ceramic seeds. Last week, the Japanese American Nation Museum hosted “Zen Garage”, a small exhibition featuring some custom vehicles from Shinya Kimura, Giant Robot’s Eric Nakamura (interviewed), and David Choe (featured). The highlight for us was Choe’s custom monster Scion xB showcasing some of his signature artwork on its body and his love for the drums in the back.
