For a recent mural in Manhattan, D*Face (interviewed) decided to go with one of his iconic Lichtenstein-inspired women holding two of his signature D-dogs. On May 12th, Castor Gallery in NYC will be opening an exhibition of paintings and charcoal drawings by Kepa Garraza. The show titled Riot is inspired by civil unrest, uprising and rebellion. Divided in two parts, the Bilbao-based artist’S NYC debut consists of six charcoal drawings showing masked anarchistic protestors and six oil paintings depicting the aftermath of vandalism at galleries and art institutions. Returning to Jonathan LeVine Gallery after a successful showing there in 2013 (covered), Mike Leavitt (interviewed) will be presenting a new body of work come May 14th. Age of Empire, a new solo from Andrew Schoultz opened last week at Joshua Liner Gallery in New York. The exhibition features painting and work on paper referencing patterns in history like war, natural disasters, and globalization as well as social, political, and economic crises. Jeff Soto for Empellón Taqueria (New York)

Earlier this month, Jeff Soto (interviewed) painted (with the assistance of his brother and sister-in-law) an impressive two-wall mural at Empellón in New York. Invited in by one of his long-time fans and chef Alex Stupak (seen below) to infuse his surreal imagery onto the walls of his West Village outpost, the California native chose to highlight the rooster as well a group of pottery growing imagined plants and succulents. Tomorrow night (April 21st) in New York, Tom Sachs will be sharing his collection of bricolage sculptural pieces inspired by the iconic boomboxes of the 70s and 80s (also see SXSW ’15). Boombox Retrospective, 1999–2016 at the Brooklyn Museum features eighteen works that illustrate the sculptor’s ability to recreate everyday objects with re-purposed materials. After some impressive shows on the West Coast, Andrew Hem (interviewed) will be moving east for his next solo show. Leap opens on May 14th at the Jonathan LeVine Gallery in New York and will feature the Los Angeles-based artist’s surreal otherworldly scenes painted with a vivid palette of blues, greens, reds, and splashes of golden light.
