Not long after finishing his big installation at Rice University Art Gallery, prolific artist Gaia is back on the streets focusing on a new mural in Kingston, NY for the O+ Festival, a very unique event in which artists exchange their contributions for health and wellness services from art-loving doctors, dentists, and other medical providers. Next week, Masakatsu Sashie makes his New York debut with an exhibition at Jonathan LeVine Gallery. For now, we’ll bring you an inside look Sashie’s studio as he prepares for this show. From the looks of things it appears he will bring back his urban spheres and display the interesting perspectives on a society filled with modernism and consumerism. After a great first week in New York City where Banksy hit seven different locations over seven days (covered here), he starts off the week on Monday with a philosphical reference piece (Day 8). Releases: Banksy x Os Gemeos for The Village Voice

Two of street art’s finest have come together for a special collaboration for the cover of New York’s The Village Voice. Two variations of the cover were made – one with Banksy’s signature riot police surrounding one of Os Gemeos’ yellow characters and the other cover is the riot policeman in a sea of yellow figures each dressed in a vibrant outfit – some actually wearing shirts paying homage to some of Banksy’s greatest hits. Openings: David Ellis – “Hudson River Alley” @ Joshua Liner

New York based artist David Ellis currently has a solo show titled Hudson River Alley going at Joshua Liner Gallery through October 19. This exhibition showcases the beautiful body of work consisitng of sculptures and paintings influenced by his new studio surroundings in Woodstock, NY. The area’s natural and historical surroundings plays a role in the artist’s use of tobacco-stained paper and embrace of imagery such as black bears, silhouettes of soldiers, and the American flag. Now through October 26th at Paul Kasmin Gallery, British artist and YBA alumnus Ian Davenport has an exhibition of new paintings titled Colorfall. Known for his colorful “puddle” abstract paintings, Davenport brings brilliantly chromatic canvases, a spectrum of more or less evenly painted stripes cascading down before some unseen current disrupts their flow, transforming them into swirling eddies of colors mixing together. After releasing a provocative video (seen directly below) for day #6 and a mobile waterfall truck for his day #5 of his Better Out Than In project in NYC, Banksy is continuing this event with a new street piece. It is his fourth day of his street residency in New York, and for today the ever elusive Banksy created an ongoing series of works titled Random graffiti given a Broadway makeover. Known for simple, witty ideas, this concept is a perfect example of the street artist’s creative thinking. By adding a flashy “The Musical” under random graffiti around the city, addressing either economic, political, neighborhood or completely private issues, the artist is commenting on the superficial way our society tends to look at these or other issues. Fans of street art know the legend of French artist Blek Le Rat. The pioneer of stenciling has garnered praise from notable peers such as Banksy and Shepard Fairey. We recently stopped by Jonathan LeVine Gallery to catch Blek’s latest exhibition entitled Ignorance is Bliss. This large show took over all three spaces in LeVine’s gallery and featured canvased works and a golden sculpture of his interpretation of Michelangelo’s David. Discuss Blek Le Rat here.

For his third act in his ongoing street residency in New York, the UK-based Banksy created a new stenciled piece near 24th & 6th street. The image of a dog and fire hydrant’s relationship demonstrated Mr. B’s humor to his fans in the Big Apple once again.
