Openings: Galerie Perrotin – “Art Carnival Park” @ Russian Tea Room

In anticipation for the second exhibition at Galerie Perrotin’s New York outpost, we bring you an inside look at the art party of the year (thus far). After the grand opening of the exhibition with Paola Pivi, a list of the who’s who in the New York art scene arrived last month at the Russian Tea Room for a special Art Carnival Park. Emmanuel Perrotin, known for throwing some of the most creative and festive events, transformed the famed venue into an incredible state fair […]

Streets: Banksy – “Better Out Than In” (New York) – Final Days

Since we last mentioned Banksy’s ongoing art residency in the Big Apple, he’s since created a piece near Yankee Stadium (seen below) and painted over an existing piece in a thrift shop for charity (also seen below). And now, earlier today, he brought the historic Better Out Than In to a close with his take (seen above) on the bubble tags made famous by vandals in New York. The inflatable throw-up was seen on the Long Island Expressway near Queens. Discuss Banksy here.

Streets: Swoon – Bowery & Houston Mural (Part I)

Earlier today, AM stopped by the corner of Bowery & Houston to catch up with Swoon (interviewed) as she started her mural. Putting up her work over the last two artists here (REVOK & POSE), the street artist and activist is only one in a long line of creatives who have blessed the location in the previous months (see here). We’ll be following up with the finished piece, but for now, enjoy some in-progress photos. Discuss Swoon here.

Previews: Jeff Depner – ‘Variations: Black Napkins’ @ Nancy Margolis Gallery

Vancouver-based artist Jeff Depner opens his debut New York solo exhibition this week at Nancy Margolis Gallery. Depner is renowned for his highly graphical, abstract compositions and his use of layers, textures, colour and repetition of geometric elements create a visual feast. We’ve featured a look into Depner’s creative process previously here on AM, and it’s worth taking a look back at that to fully understand how many iterations and transitional layers each of his paintings is subjected to prior to it being judged as complete. […]

Streets: Banksy – “Better Out Than In” (New York) – Day 19, 20, 21

After we visited his literal outdoor gallery installation last Friday, Banksy continued his assault on the streets of New York over the weekend. Adding a video in Staten Island (below) that completed his tour of all five boroughs, Mr. B also created a clever strength tester stencil piece (below) utilizing existing elements, and a new one in South Bronx to start your Monday off (above). Discuss Banksy here.

Streets: Banksy – “Better Out Than In” (New York) – Day 18

Today, Banksy took his artist residency in New York straight to the hornet’s nest (aka Chelsea). Yes, the same Chelsea that houses some of the world’s most prestigious galleries. Keeping to the theme, Banksy put on display the canvases created in his most recent collaboration with his peers from the southern hemisphere, Os Gemeos, for the The Village Voice. Banksy changed things up to keep with the theme for today’s display and kept things orderly with the help of some security guards to regulate the number of […]

Streets: Banksy – “Better Out Than In” (New York) – Day 10, 11, 12, 13, 14

For those who were busy over the weekend, here is a summary of the latest Banksy pieces for his Better Out Than In art residency in New York. In addition to street stencils, Mr. B also blessed the Big Apple with more “performance art” with a truck filled with animated stuffed animals heading for the slaughter house (see video below). And, in an unexpected twist, Banksy sold original signed canvases in Central Park for only $60 with  all of the purchases likely going to people who didn’t even […]
