Armory Week ’10: Scope New York

We attended the preview of Scope New York last Wednesday and visited the fair again on Saturday, and with the exception of stand-out booths by Anonymous, David B. Smith and newcomers Jackie Paper, found the fair to be somewhat disappointing overall. The show seemed small, not just relative to the enormous size of this year’s Armory Show, but compared with this year’s Scope Miami or last year’s Scope NY. And the overall selection and quality seemed to be down as well, with not a lot […]

Preview: David B. Smith Gallery @ Scope NY 2010

Another must see fair during Armory Week is Scope New York, which always has an impressive list of galleries from around the world showing cutting-edge emerging artists. One such gallery is our mile-high friends from David B. Smith Gallery, who were nice enough to give us a sneak peak at what they’ll be showing this year, including stunning pieces by Gregory Euclide, Christina Empedocles, Jason Theilke, Kristen Schiele and Jud Bergeron. The VIP preview for Scope NY 2010 opens later today, and AM will certainly […]

Openings: Robert Hardgrave/Further Group Show @ Joshua Liner Gallery

Saturday night, AM had the pleasure of attending the openings of two exciting new shows at Chelsea’s Joshua Liner Gallery. In the main gallery was the “Further” group exhibition, which features Damon Soule, David Choong Lee, MARS-1, Nome Edonna, Oliver Vernon, Robert Hardgrave and Tomokazu Matsuyama. As we mentioned in our preview, the show consists of artists selected for an upcoming book of the same name highlighting contemporary abstract painting and themes of spiritualism and mysticism. Although the selected artists each has a unique and […]

Preview: “Further” Group Show @ Joshua Liner Gallery

Tomorrow night, the Joshua Liner Gallery will host “Further,” a group exhibition featuring works by artists Damon Soule, David Choong Lee, MARS-1, Nome Edonna, Oliver Vernon, Robert Hardgrave and Tomokazu Matsuyama. The exhibition coincides with the release of a new book of the same name that brings together the seven artists and their varied takes on contemporary abstraction, mysticism, futurism, and surrealism. See a preview image from each of the artists, after the jump.

Mars-1 x Oliver Vernon x Damon Soule Collaboration

What do you get when you put three artists together over Halloween weekend and let them all work on one painting together?  A pretty intense collaboration… Often times when artists work on the same canvas, what initially may have seemed like a good idea may not turn out as well as one would hope.  Discordant styles, varying familiarity with different mediums, and differing artistic visions can all be detrimental to the final result. We have witnessed much of the maneuvering and politics of this interaction […]

Preview: Oliver Vernon – “Double Down” @ Irvine Contemporary

Our friend Oliver Vernon is about to premier a new set of work at the Irvine Contemporary tonight (6pm).  The show “Double Down” consists of the next stage in Oliver’s already psychedelic and well rendered 3-D visual works, utilizing gouache, ink and acrylic to create his complex compositions. During his show at Joshua Liner Gallery (covered) and his last show down here in DC (covered), we caught ourselves and others staring at his work trying to take in all the detail. Another incentive to stop […]

Openings: “Street/Studio” Experience @ Irvine Contemporary

Washington, D.C. got hit with a taste of urban art this past weekend thanks to the Irvine Contemporary, who held a group show and street/studio experience that featured artists: Shepard Fairey, Swoon, Dalek, Gaia, Imminent Disaster, Oliver Vernon, EVOL and Pisa 73. AM got to tag along as these urban artists got together to create a show that was not only inside the gallery, but also along the back walls and alleys of some prime D.C. real estate. From the moment daybreak started on Thursday, EVOL, Pisa […]

Openings: Crash & Oliver Vernon @ Joshua Liner

AM had the chance to stop by Joshua Liner Gallery to check out two great shows: Unexpected Occurrences by Oliver Vernon and Unfinished Business by Crash (previewed). Both of these artists took us by surprise with their unique styles. Crash has long been regarded as one of the pioneers of graffiti art, but we noticed his works brought a mix of Lichtenstein meets the streets. His raw yet pop-y images leaped out to grab our attention as we passed by each painting.  Oliver Vernon had a very interesting mix of geometric conformity vs. […]

Preview: Inaugural Show @ David B. Smith Gallery

David B. Smith Gallery (interviewed) will be putting on his inaugural show this Saturday, Jan 24th in Denver with some of his artists – Emil Alzamora, Ala Ebtekar, Gregory Euclide, Amir H. Fallah, Josh Keyes, Kris Lewis, Kristen Schiele, Jason Thielke & Oliver Vernon. A pretty nice group to start out with… Stop by if you are in the area as the artists Josh, Gregory, and Jason will be in attendance at the opening, and they will also be distributing their 2009 catalogue complimentary to […]

Preview: Crash + Oliver Vernon @ Joshua Liner

Joshua Liner Gallery will open a new show featuring Oliver Vernon and Crash tonight. Oliver Vernon’s show: Unexpected Occurrence features a new body of work from the Brooklyn based artist. Known for quirky combinations of organic, mechanical, cosmological, and cultural elements teem with lively intelligence. Crash also has a new show: Unfinished Business showcases both new and old works from the Bronx artist. In hims recent works, Crash excerpts mere details from his wider language of linguistic signs, graphic forms, and rainbow-hued embellishments. The show […]
