Last night AM attended the opening for Tomokazu Matsuyama’s (interviewed) “Glancing at Twin Peaks” (previewed) opening at Joshua Liner Gallery. The highly anticipated opening for Matzu’s NYC solo drew a packed house. Matzu’s distinctly unique pieces exhibited his signature contemporary flair on traditional subjects. This show continued his use of bold color palettes and contrasting “splashes” that make the pieces leap out at the audience. AM was on hand at the opening of SÃo Paulo at Scion Installation LA this past Saturday. The show was curated by Choque Cultural in association with Jonathan LeVine and features work from some of Brazil’s best: Calma, Carlos Dias, MZK, Ramon Martins, Silvana Mello, Speto, Titi Freak and ZezÃ£o. Openings: Dan May @ Copro Nason

Â Dan May (interviewed) was in attendance at the opening of his solo show â€œSlow Collisionâ€ this past Saturday at Copro Nason. In addition to having the pleasure of meeting and speaking with May himself, attendees were intrigued by May’s dreamlike, lush environments and delightful yet haunting humanoids and monsters. AM checked out Baltimore street artist Chris Stain’s solo exhibition, “Up On The Roof Countin’ Pigeons,” (previewed) at the Carmichael Gallery. Stain absolutely knocked one out of the park with his transformation of the front gallery space into a New York City rooftop scene, which featured an amazing gargantuan-sized mural on one of the gallery’s walls. This past Saturday, Copro Nason also opened “Like Giving a Kid a Loaded Gun,” the solo debut by Matthew Bone. A local of Los Angeles, Bone is a figurative artist who paints dark images filled with strong visual impact that are an allegory of the morbidity present in the world today and the consequences of the revelation of these conditions. Last night, AM was on hand at Jonathan LeVine for the preview of two great shows, Shag’s Voyeur (previewed/interviewed) and Stephan “Calma” Doitschinoff’s Novo Mundo. Shag’s work is nothing less than magnetic from the second one enters the gallery. Rounding up AM‘s whirlwind gallery tour of LA last weekend was Copronason’s show of Kukula, Tin, and Sas Christian. The Santa Monica gallery was busy with three appealing artists at its opening this past Saturday. As usual, Sas Christian presented a quality, not quantity body of work.
