ARTWALK Culver City: Blum & Poe, Bradford Stewart, Kim Light / Lightbox, Kinsey/DesForges, Koplin Del Rio, LA Contemporary & LeBasse Projects

Rounding out our coverage of Culver City’s ARTWALK 2009, we bring you photos from the shows on display at Blum & Poe, Bradford Stewart, Kim Light / Lightbox, Kinsey/DesForges, Koplin Del Rio, LA Contemporary and LeBasse Projects. It was awesome to be able to visit so many galleries and see such a diverse range of great art all in one visit. The only thing we’d change? Culver City should make this a monthly event rather than an annual one. Enjoy the visuals after the jump.

Openings: Poketo Benefit and Art Auction – “F%#K Cancer! We Love Justin.”

AM was in attendance at the “F%#k Cancer! We Love Justin” silent art auction held at Poketo studios. You may not recognize Justin VanHoy’s name, but you’ve undoubtedly seen the work he’s done as art director of Swindle and his contributions to Obey Clothing, Cobra Snake and Wired Magazine. All proceeds from the event went directly to support Justin’s recovery from a successful bone marrow transplant after a relapse of lukemia. The big contributor of the evening was Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Paul Weitz, who went […]

Openings: Know Hope – “the times won’t save you (this rain smells of memory)” @ Carmichael Gallery

Israeli street artist Know Hope’s Los Angeles solo debut “the times won’t save you (this rain smells of memory)” (previewed) opened to a packed house at the Carmichael Gallery. Patrons were in awe with his intricate gallery installation echoing the theme of the show, which was comprised of cardboard buildings, his signature characters, paper raindrops and fishing twine. Equally as impressive was Know Hope’s latest series of works, which featured a free-form poem of sorts, with a powerful coupling of words and images of his characters in […]

Openings: Dzine – “Love & Loyalty” @ Leeahn Gallery (South Korea)

Chicago-based artist Dzine was nice enough to send over images from his latest solo show, “Love & Loyalty,” which opened last week at South Korea’s Leeahn Gallery. From the look of the photos, there’s no wonder why the entire show sold-out before the opening. Dzine’s newest resin and crystal covered paintings are explosively colorful and energetic, especially the gigantic “In the beginning… (after Assumption of the Virgin).” And Dzine, who has become well-known for his tricked-out custom vehicles, unveiled his newest low-rider bike, entitled “Loyalty,” […]

Openings: Bruce LaBruce – “Untitled Hardcore Zombie Project” @ Peres Projects

Bruce LaBruce’s “Untitled Hardcore Zombie Project” at Peres Projects in Culver City is one of those shows that makes you do a complete double take the moment you walk in the door. Describing himself not as a pornographer but “an artist who works in porn,” LaBruce’s specialty is his unique twist on the horror genre, with his inclusion of fanatical groups, zombies and gay sex. More after the jump… Note: This post contains strong language and adult oriented material of a graphic and sexual nature […]
