Basel Week Miami ’13: Pulse

One of the long-time satellite fairs we always check out during Art Basel Week in Miami is Pulse. As in previous years, the fair was held at The Ice Palace, just south of Wynwood, and consisted of a wide range of domestic and international galleries, including New Image Art, Martha Otero, Yancey Richardson and Mixed Greens. Breeze Block Gallery opened their huge group show Wider than a postcard (previewed) alongside the first solo show in their new gallery 2 space – olive47’s bonita bonita (featured) a couple of weeks back to a packed Portland crowd. Over 400 individual works went into the postcard show with 200 artists providing postcard sized works. On the back of his Space//Form group exhibition last year (covered), Arrested Motion’s Sven Davis is working with Breeze Block Gallery in Portland again on another huge group event entitled Wider than a postcard. Following directly on from Part 1 of our coverage of the busy Space//Form opening, AM now delves a little deeper pictorially into the artwork created for this huge group exhibition of 110 artists with a series of pictures where the art is more viewable (like the Mark Dean Veca installation above). As the opening of the Space//Form group exhibition draws ever nearer, and following on from our studio view, AM brings you a glimpse of some of the work in this huge show. Following our recently curated group exhibitions in Hong Kong; East West Connect and Los Angeles; City of Fire, AM’s UK correspondent Sven Davis has branched out with his own curatorial endeavour Space//Form. The group exhibition brings together over 100 young contemporary artists, and opens 6th September at Portland’s Breeze Block Gallery. We recently attended the opening of Hueless, a group show of black and white works at Malick Williams & Co. Although the exhibition may have lacked color, it certainly did not lack artistry, with an exciting selection of monochromatic pieces by the likes of D Face, Shepard Fairey, Erik Haze, Curtis Kulig, Pete Watts and Skullphone. As the titled suggests, the goal of the show is the pull the traditional color palettes from everyone’s arsenal and challenge them to create works under a monochromatic direction. AM recently attended a great show at the Sho Gallery in Brooklyn. The group exhibition entitled TRANSFORM showcased the paintings and sculptures of 30 artists that work for or have worked at Takashi Murakami’s Kaikai Kiki Studios. Although this show was not in anyway affiliated with the studio, it certainly impressed with the overwhelming talent that this influential studio possess.
