Preview: Ryan McGinley – “Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere” @ Team Gallery

We at AM sometimes worry about Ryan McGinley – with all the work he accomplishes, it seems he never sleeps. That, or he is one of the most efficient and productive artists around. Fresh off his Olympics video and photo essay, Pringles of Scotland campaign, and solo exhibition at The Breeder, the phenomenal photographer opens his latest one-man show, Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere, on March 18 at Team Gallery. From what we see so far, the show seems to consist of black and white portraits, […]

Ryan McGinley “Moonmilk” Book Available Again

Photographer extraordinaire Ryan McGinley’s Moonmilk book, released on occasion of his solo exhibition of the same name at Alison Jacques Gallery, sold out with quickness the first time it was released. Some who missed out on this initial offering shelled out about $200-250 for the book on the secondary market. Well, for those who want the book, missed out the first time, and want it at an affordable price from the primary source, you are in luck – Mörel Books has made a second edition […]

Preview: Phillips de Pury Contemporary Art Evening and Day Sales

AM continues its coverage of the London February Auctions (see our Christie’s preview) with a look at Phillips de Pury’s Contemporary Art Evening and Day Sales (February 12 – 13 2010). Overall, there are fewer outstanding pieces available here than at Christie’s or Sotheby’s, however there are still many fantastic, iconic pieces up for grabs, including several Basquiats, a strong Banksy, an early Kaws set, and a fabulous Ai Weiwei triptych (above). Take a look after the jump…

Video / Photo Essay: Ryan McGinley – “Lightness Of Being An Olympian”

After recently creating a video for Pringle of Scotland, photographer Ryan McGinley has moved on to the next project in his young directing career. “Lightness Of Being An Olympian” is a video he directed for the New York Times about the upcoming 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. In it, you can see some nice visuals and the characteristic color work that McGinley is famous for in some of his photography. Of course, the project also allowed him to document some of the action in a […]

Openings: Alex Prager – “Week-end” @ Yancey Richardson and M+B

Alex Prager’s third installment of her trilogy on Valley life, “Week-End” opens today, January 30th, in Los Angeles at M+B Gallery while the New York showing at Yancey Richardson will continue till the 20th of February.  Whereas her two previous shows, “Polyester” and “The Big Valley” respectively presented the glamor of vintage suburban life and it’s gradual deterioration, “Week-End” is a dark look into the lives of her subjects as their world finally unfurls.  In a style reminiscent of Cindy Sherman mixed with a color […]

Releases: Kent Rogowski – “Valentine’s Bears” @ 20×200

Today at 2:00pm Eastern, affordable art-edition purveyor 20×200 will be releasing a set of Valentine’s Day inspired prints by one of our favorite photographer/artists, Kent Rogowski. The images – created exclusively for this release – are the latest from Rogowski’s Bears series, in which he turns stuffed animals inside out, transforming the commonplace children’s toys into something bizarrely cute and lovably grotesque. As per usual, 20×200 will have various sizes available to suit almost any budget, so if you are looking for that unique Valentine’s […]

This year’s London Art Fair, held from January 13-17, attracted over 23,000 visitors and featured a wide variety of art to hold their attention. No matter how many art fairs we see or attend, we can never get enough of tremendous amount of paintings, sculptures, videos, installations, and other art on display – buffet style. Take a look at all the pics after the jump including fantastic new works from Jin Young Yu, whom we interviewed early last year.

Openings: Morgan Slade – “Fist of Fear, Touch of Death” @ Shooting Gallery

Morgan Slade opened his new show, “Fist of Fear, Touch of Death” last weekend at San Francisco’s Shooting Gallery. Featuring ten new large scale photographs, Morgan’s latest body of work is most striking and provided a great introduction of his work to the Bay Area. His subjects, faceless models donning football helmets, stormtrooper masks, and mascot heads, pose playfully though it’s their anonymity and resulting lack of true beauty that perhaps grants such freedoms as modern day morettas. After photographing his models, Slade hand-distresses and […]

Video: “Pringle of Scotland Spring/Summer 2010 campaign” – Ryan McGinley

Ryan McGinley, famed photographer, but also aspiring feature film director, recently directed a video (watch it after the jump) for luxury knitwear brand Pringle of Scotland.  It stars Tilda Swinton (whom McGinley has long admired) in a Pringle of Scotland dress and features signature McGinley scenes, such as forest, rocks, waves, and caves.  Sorry, no nudity this time.  It’s been a busy time for the artist, as he also recently had a showing at Art Basel Miami (where he was scheduled to speak) and is […]
