POW! WOW! ’15 / Streets: Olek

Currently displayed prominently in front of the Honolulu Museum of Art and sponsored by Anthropologie is the latest evidence of Olek’s crocheting prowess. The iconic outrigger canoe utilized by the Hawaiian people was transformed by the New York-based Polish artist with her signature technique for POW! WOW! Hawaii (more coverage here). At 10am on Monday, Feb 9th, the mural painting part of POW! WOW! Hawaii 2015 officially begun with a traditional Hawaiian blessing ceremony at the Lana Lane headquarters in Kaka’ako in Honolulu. On the 10th of February at 6pm, 1xRun.com opened the doors to their 3rd annual POW! WOW! Hawaii print show at the Fresh Cafe in Kaka’ako hand in hand with Pangeaseed’s presentation of their Sea Walls releases. Offering rare copies of recent releases by POW! WOW! Along with mural painting that started off today and a museum show with Thinkspace Gallery (covered), one of the central events of POW! WOW! Hawaii is the print exhibition organized in collaboration with 1xRun.com. For their 3rd annual show they scheduled 30+ limited edition print releases featuring most of the artists from this year POW! Last night, POW! WOW! Hawaii kicked things off with a group show curated by Thinkspace at the Honolulu Museum Of Art School (111 Victoria Street). Recap: RVCAloha x POW! WOW! 2014

Like in 2013 (covered), 2014 saw POW! WOW! Hawaii collaborate again with the annual gathering of RVCA’s advocates and artists for their winter getaway. Along with a highlight performance by Action Bronson at Republick to launch a BornXRaised and RVCA collaboration, guests also enjoyed watching a new mural (see video below by Andrew Tran) go up at the Keolu Skatepark in Kailua, Hawaii, painted by Dmote and Soul. Last week, the first POW! WOW! Taiwan wrapped up successfully as invited artists finished public works throughout the capital city of Taipei. With the main event based in Hawaii (see 2014), it looks like the crew behind this annual art retreat will be branching out to different parts of the world. POW! WOW! recently completed another exciting project in their hometown of Honolulu. A few months after wrapping up another successful edition of POW! WOW! Hawaii (covered), they teamed up with Versace in order to create a large scale mural to celebrate the opening of their new flagship store.
