Streets: RISK – Rock On The Range Festival

Earlier this month, RISK head out to Columbus, Ohio for the Rock On The Range festival, a project he collaborated on with Danny Wimmer Presents. With the goal to create the world’s largest interactive mural, he has so far attended two events (out of a planned ten) and has had the participation of over 15,000 people (with a goal of 100,000 people & a 10,000 sq. foot mural). The process starts with the Los Angeles graffiti legend laying down the foundation on the wall with his “beautifully destroyed” technique. Then […]

Streets: RISK (Los Angeles)

The offices of Rock Paper Scissors, a post production company located on the Westside recently had the locally-based RISK work on two walls for them. The building had quite a bit of history associated with it as he and other graffiti artists had painted it 24 years ago when it was owned by Sylvester Stallone. For this particular project, some of the iconic original elements were left while some of the original artists and new friends added to the new mural. Using RISK’s signature “beautifully […]

Openings: Risk & Nathan Ota – “Innocence Lost” @ Corey Helford Gallery

A couple weekends ago, old friends RISK (interviewed) and Nathan Ota opened up a show together at the Corey Helford Gallery. Displaying their collaborative efforts (like the paintings seen in 2011 in LA & SF), the two artists put together a cohesive new body of work that features RISK’s deconstructive color washes & lettering along with Ota’s surreal characters. Take a look at more photos from the opening of Innocence Lost below… Discuss Risk here. Discuss Nathan Ota here.

POW! WOW! ’14 / Openings: RVCA x TWSL – “#RVCATWFSL”

Last night in conjunction with POWWOW ’14, RVCA & The Seventh Letter teamed up to put on an exhibition featuring some of the graffiti & street artists they are affiliated with. Working with similar sized canvases, they each translated their imagery and aesthetic on the streets onto panel for the popup show (691 Auahi Street). Take a look at what the impressive roster of artists came up with in the photos below as well as what Barry McGee (aka Ly Quan) hid on the back of a non-descript gray and black speckled […]

Upcoming: Risk & Nathan Ota – “Innocence Lost” @ Corey Helford Gallery

On Saturday, Feburary 15th, the Corey Helford Gallery in Culver City will host a two-person show from RISK (interviewed) and Nathan Ota. As seen from their collaborative exhibitions in 2001 (LA & SF), the two reunited artists who started in the graffiti scene together over 25 years ago, have imagery that seems to fit so nicely together despite their divergent paths since high school. Expect more of Ota’s surrealistic and figurative characters superimposed over the letter-based backgrounds of RISK. Discuss Risk here. Discuss Nathan Ota here.

Streets: Risk, Meggs, Insa, Uglar, Echo – Abandoned Water Park Project

One of our contributing photographers in the past, Birdman, recently arranged for some artists to paint in an abandoned water park located somewhere in the Mojave Desert between California and Las Vegas. The project in association with VNA saw Risk, Meggs, Insa (along with some suicide girls decked out in Insa gear), Uglar, and Echo made their mark in and around the structures that exuded the aura of a failed American Dream. More photos from the can be seen in Issue 24 of Very Nearly Almost Magazine with some […]

Openings: Risk – “Metallic Tissue” @ Fabien Castanier

Over the weekend, Fabien Castanier Gallery in Los Angeles hosted an exhibition featuring new work by Kelly “RISK” Graval (interviewed) curated by Roger Gastman. Drawing from a career spanning over 30 years, the legendary hometown graffiti artist has created a diverse body of work collectively entitled Metallic Tissue. The show highlights his versatility with various mediums and styles, attesting to how far his artform has expanded and evolved since his pioneering days of getting up on freeway overpasses, signs and billboards, dubbed the “heavens.” Photo credit: Theonepointeight. Rewind: Oct 7 – Oct 13

It’s been quite a while since our last Rewind feature, so it’s high time we bring you some videos. Starting things off is an explicit new music video from  Tyler, The Creator entitled Tamale. If you recognize the scene from 0:48 – 1:02, it’s because it is a scene based of a Mark Ryden painting who also designed the cover for his new album – Wolf. Other notable videos: An interview with Anthony Lister at Wynwood Miami last May. ROA, Phlegm and others recreate famous Baroque paintings. RuPaul drives […]
