Videos / Basel Week Miami ’11: Risk – “Beautifully Destroyed”

While he is currently working on a yet to be completed mural in Los Angeles (covered), Risk did recently complete a wall in Miami (as you can see in the photos here). Entitled Beautifully Destroyed, the piece that was created during Art Basel Week features the MSK/AWR affiliated writer’s signature geometric forms as well as his color washes & drips. Koshin Finley has all the footage on video above, but you can check it ou in person if you are in the area (Grand Central @ 697 N […]

Basel Week Miami ’11 / Streets: RISK

Not content to let his MSK brothers (RETNA, RIME) have all the fun, the LA-based RISK also made the trip to Miami for Art Basel Week. Using his unique skills over several days, the influential writer got up this abstract and multicolored gem for his fans in South Florida to enjoy. Thankfully, photographer Koshin Finley was on hand to document everything with his lens. More photos after the jump…

Streets: Risk & Retna – Heal The Bay Charity Project (Santa Monica)

This morning, AM was invited for the unveil of a new collaborative piece between graffiti artists Risk and Retna (featured). In conjunction with the Heal the Bay charity, an environmental group working to keep the Santa Monica bay clean and free of pollution, the two prolific artists had been working on this project during the last two months under major secrecy. The process actually began 2 months ago when Risk began layering a multitude of wooden panels with a palette of different colors meant to […]

Openings: Risk & Nathan Ota – “That Was Then, This Is Now” @ LeBasse Projects – Culver City

This past weekend, Lebasse Projects hosted a traveling exhibition (see SF coverage) which featured collaborations by artists Risk and  Nathan Ota. Titled That Was Then, This Is Now, the show brought together the two long time friends for an exhibit which showcased a superb collection of artwork diplaying each artist’s strengths and respective styles. While Risk’s work often focused on graffiti-type iconography and lettering, Ota rendered the rest of the paintings with finely detailed settings and characters that at times felt surreal and strange. Although […]

Openings: Nathan Ota & Risk – “That Was Then, This Is Now” @ 111 Minna

Thursday evening, 111 Minna in San Francisco hosted the opening for Nathan Ota and Risk’s collaborative exhibition, That Was Then, This Is Now. The two respected graffiti artists first collaborated over 25 years in high school, but had lost contact ever since. It was not until last year, when Greg Simkins and Jeff Soto worked on murals with Risk (and knew about the two’s previous history), that it was suggested that they reconnect again. This lead to a collaborative mural at Hurley Space last October […]

Openings: Crash, Freedom, and Risk – “Blurring the Lines” @ Corey Helford Gallery

With the overwhelming success of Art in the Streets, it seems like LA can’t seem to get enough of street art lately. And for hardcore graffiti fans, one couldn’t ask for more than a group show curated by Roger Gastman, featuring New York legends CRASH and FREEDOM, alongside historic LA pioneer and figurehead RISK. Last Saturday, AM attended the opening of Blurring the Lines at Corey Helford Gallery, which features new work by these East and West Coast graffiti masters. This exhibition marks a moment […]

Previews: Crash, Freedom & Risk – “Blurring The Lines” @ Corey Helford Gallery

This weekend, Corey Helford Gallery is showing Blurring The Lines, a throwback to the 80s where graffiti was not looked yet looked upon as art in the public eye. The exhibiton will feature three old school masters – Crash, Freedom and RISK. Curated by our friend Roger Gastman (co-curator of the Art In The Streets Exhibition), this gives us a close up look at the fine artwork of the three artists who were also featured in the MOCA show. Check out some more preview images […]

Streets: Basel Week Miami ’10 – Graffiti

Sharing the stage with the street art at Art Basel Week Miami were the graffiti artists although the lines between the two are sometimes blurred. With events like Graffiti Gone Global, crews from all over the country could be seen working on throwups, tags, and large complex pieces putting their handstyles and techniques on full display. Check out a selection of photos after the jump, but for a lot more, go to Focused On Graff’s photostream…

Preview: Nathan Ota x Risk @ Hurley Space

Take a look at the date of the photo above. It was taken almost 25 years ago of Nathan Ota (who recently opened his solo in LA) and RISK (of MSK fame). And yes, surprisingly like many of the fine artists we follow, Nathan had a background in graffiti. After losing touch for a long time, the duo have reunited for a collaboration mural at the Hurley Space in Orange County. Stop by to take a look for yourself on Saturday, October 16th (6-10pm) and […]
