Showing: Kai & Sunny / Ryan De La Hoz – “The Matter Of Time” @ 886 Gallery

A little while ago, we published an article with Kai & Sunny where we sat down for an interview ahead of their showing in San Francisco at the 886 Geary Gallery entitled The Matter Of Time. We now have photos to share from the London-based duo’s exhibition as well as shots of the work from Ryan De La Hoz who showed jointly with them. For this show, Kai & Sunny focused on the passage of time while De La Hoz had dissent as the major theme of his pieces. Discuss Kai […]

Previews: Ryan De La Hoz – ‘Shadow of Death’ @ SoMA Yacht Club, San Francisco

This weekend Bay Area artist Ryan De La Hoz opens his latest solo exhibition Shadow of Death at SoMA Yacht Club in San Francisco. The show will feature an all new collection of work across a variety of mediums we have come to expect from this versatile maker. De La Hoz’s highly graphical style utilises recurring motifs in his work such as television static and ancient Greek imagery in commentary of how the past affects the future. Each of his works involves an element of […]

Openings: “Space//Squared” @ White Walls Gallery

Last month, White Walls Gallery in San Francisco opened a group exhibition entitled Space//Squared. Curated by Sven Davis, the showing was a followup to an event last year in Portland (covered). This time around, participating artists were again asked to contribute artwork in a 10 x 10″ format.  Along with pieces from over 100 artists (list seen below), Adam Friedman and Robert Minervini also created a site-specific installation featuring a series of paintings interspersed throughout mural elements. Roster: 2501, Adam Friedman, Adam Weir, Akiko Masker, Alex Lukas, Alicia Dubnyckyj, […]

Showing: “Paper Cuts” @ Spoke Art

A couple of weeks back, AM got to spend some time in and around San Francisco. One of the exhibitions on the calendar was Spoke Art’s group exhibition Paper Cuts. Curated by Jessica Ross, the show features eatures an array of 11 international artists each working with cut paper (natch) but with a variety of styles, techniques and of course end results. The art of paper cutting is traditionally a very unforgiving medium. There’s no eraser or additional layer of paint to disguise a mistake in […]

Openings: Ryan De La Hoz & Russell Leng – “FRAGMENTS” @ Breeze Block Gallery

Earlier this month, the Breeze Block Gallery in Portland and curator Sven Davis brought together two young artists for a joint show entitled FRAGMENTS. The Bay Area – based Ryan De La Hoz uses “motifs in his work such as television static and ancient Greek imagery” that play with ideas of destruction and perception of which his distorted hand manipulated prints we really enjoy (seen above). Paired with him and coming from more north was the Vancouver-based Russell Leng who brought with him abstract paintings mixing distinct […]

Openings: “Wider than a postcard” & olive47 – “bonita bonita” @ Breeze Block Gallery

Breeze Block Gallery opened their huge group show Wider than a postcard (previewed) alongside the first solo show in their new gallery 2 space – olive47’s bonita bonita (featured) a couple of weeks back to a packed Portland crowd. Over 400 individual works went into the postcard show with 200 artists providing postcard sized works. The work was hung on the walls in grids of 24 cards, each echoing the aspect ratio of the individual works themselves as each work was 6×4 inches. The variance of work encompassed photography […]

Showing: Ryan De La Hoz – ‘What New Mystery Is This?’ @ RVCA SF

Ryan De La Hoz has been grabbing our eye over the last couple of years and appreciation of his artwork has been building momentum rapidly recently. His current solo exhibition What New Mystery Is This? is showing at RVCA in San Francisco, and is accompanied by new window displays in the SF space by other artists we admire – Bill McRight and Ben Venom. Ryan’s work utilizes cut paper and found imagery with exquisitely detailed ink linework to create a wonderful blend of Op-Art fused with geometric assemblages. […]

Previews: “Wider than a postcard” @ Breeze Block Gallery

On the back of his Space//Form group exhibition last year (covered), Arrested Motion’s Sven Davis is working with Breeze Block Gallery in Portland again on another huge group event entitled Wider than a postcard. With over 200 artists and 400 individual works, this exhibition looks to be both bigger than the previous event and also smaller at the same time as all of the artworks are postcard sized at 6×4 inches. Each artist is either making work on a found / owned postcard and adapting / adding […]

Preview: Ryan De La Hoz – ‘Welcome To Your Doom’ @ Four Barrel

San Francisco-based artist Ryan De La Hoz brings a hometown show to Four Barrel in SF this week in the shape of Welcome To Your Doom. We like the title of the show, as De La Hoz has used it as a slogan before for a T-Shirt under his Cool Try clothing label. One such shirt proudly hangs in our  wardrobe. Ryan’s work will appeal if you’re a fan of meticulous detail and clean lines. Using a mixture of media, he combines abstract patterns and repetition of heavily symbolic motifs […]
