Ryan McGinness is an artist with a seemingly limitless passion and a work ethic to match as evidenced by his back to back exhibition in New York City during Frieze week. First was his very technical Sketches & Solutions at  Gering Lopez (covered). Then the following night, Ryan took across town to Charles Banks Gallery for the next installment of his eye catching UV reactive painting series entitled Women: Blacklight Paintings & Sculptures (See previous stops in LA, NYC,  Miami & PdP). Openings: Ryan McGinness – “Women: Sketches & Solutions” @ Gering Lopez

A couple weekends ago, New York City got their second dose (see Pace Primatives show) of Ryan McGinness’ work in as many months when Women: Sketches & Solutions opened at Gering Lopez. This first solo exhibition with the gallery featured pieces that demonstrated the NY-based painter, illustrator, and designer’s creative process in regards to his ongoing series the past several years on the deconstructed female form. Also, the exhibition was separated in two parts – this uptown venue where everything was entirely in black & […]

Openings: Ryan McGinness – “Geometric Primatives” @ Pace Primative

On Friday night, AM attended the opening for Ryan McGinness’ new show at New York’s Pace Primative. As the title Geometric Primitives indicates, Ryan utilizes his signature vocabulary of graphics and applies them to the African works that are at the core of the this specific gallery. Sounds simple right? Well this knock out exhibition is definitely more than meets the eye as Mr. McGinness raided the vast archives of African tribal art at gallery for reference, then proceeded to use repeated drawings to break down each […]

Teaser: Ryan McGinness – “Geometric Primitives” @ Pace Primitive

On Friday night, March 30th, Pace Primitive in New York will be hosting the opening of Ryan McGinness’ newest solo show entitled Geometric Primitives. The title of the show plays off a term used in computer graphics, which is part of NYC-based artist’s process, that refer the smallest and irreducible geometric elements that the system can handle such as lines, circles, curves, and polygons. Continuing on this theme, McGinness has taken advantage of Pace Primitive’s inventory of African art, which has historically featured schematic reductions of […]

Openings: Ryan McGinness – “Women: The Blacklight Paintings” @ The Standard (Los Angeles)

Ryan McGinness showed a darker side to his work on Saturday night, when the third installment of his Women: The Blacklight Paintings series opened at The Standard Hotel’s Purple Lounge in West Hollywood. As with the events at Art Basel Miami last year (covered) and in New York early this year (covered), his luminescent deconstructions of the female form graced the walls of the establishment while similarly painted dancers cavorted about the room.  Of note, coinciding with the party was also the release of McGinness’ Blacklight Nudie […]

Openings: Ryan McGinness – “Trophies” @ PRISM

Last night, PRISM filled its spacious gallery rooms with Trophies, the fourth in a series of shows from Ryan McGinness. As with the other Los Angeles exhibitions we have already covered (Michael Kohn & Country Club), this showing centered around a theme – gold sculptural pieces based on his Women series or works. Along with some wall murals, these 3-dimensional representations from the NY-based artist are taken from his deconstruction of the female form. More opening pics after the jump from Brandon Shigeta.
