Not only did the Outside Lands festival in San Francisco feature a great lineup of musicians (Neil Young, Santigold, Stevie Wonder, Jack White, and more), a select group of artists were also invited in to paint some murals. Last Friday evening, Mike Giant opened his latest show, Confessions of an Old Dirty Skateboarder at FFDG. The show consisted of new drawings on paper (in his signature clean and precise style done with a Sharpie), Skater Girl photograph prints, as well as an installation of the artist’s personal skate deck collection that serves as a retrospective of the designs he has done over the years. Openings: Meggs – “Truth In Myth” @ White Walls

Over the weekend, Australian-based painter Meggs opened his latest show Truth In Myth (previewed) at White Walls. The show featured a grand installation of a pyramid of skulls in a fully painted room, as well as a large street piece on the wall right outside the gallery. The new body of work consisted of paintings, collage, sculpture and mixed media that bridge the gap between past and present by fusing contemporary superhero elements with that of ancient mythology. Preview: Meggs – “Truth In Myth” @ White Walls

Tomorrow night in San Francisco, White Walls will be lending their walls to Australia-based painter Meggs as he reveals a new body of work he has been creating on site over the last month. Truth in Myth will feature his comic-inspired imagery infused with kinetic textures and abstract touches played out on multiple surfaces. Besides the aerosol and acrylic on canvas works, his renderings of gods, heroes, and supernatural beings were also painted on plaster skulls, original 1980’s Phantom Comics, and wood knife sculptures. This Saturday, July 14th sees the opening of Jeremy Fish’s (featured) solo show at Fifty24SF. Entitled Where Hearts Get Left, the new body of work to be presented is a testament to the the Bay Area-based artist’s love for San Francisco. As such, the imagery presented is thematically tied into local references including Native American legends, food spots, tourist attractions, historical details, and more all rendered beautifully in his signature style including his use of sculptural motifs.
