Right on the heals of a successful opening of his solo in Los Angeles (covered), KAWS has returned for a second engagement at Harbour City in Hong Kong. The Coastal Currents Festival of Visual Arts in Hastings in the South East of England, recently hosted new work from Kate MccGwire. Known for her sculptural works created from feathers, the British artist elected to create two site-specific installation pieces – Secrete (seen above) and Purge. The New York art collectors who can afford the added cost of a commissioned Anish Kapoor sculpture to their living situation may want to consider 56 Leonard by Herzog & de Meuron. The Swiss architecture firm has collaborated with many artists and been associated with many art related projects in the past, and these new luxury condos currently in construction are no less stunning. On September 7th, the Freemans location of Salon94 in New York will be opening a small group show from Mary Frey, Pat McCarthy, JJ PEET and Tom Sachs (seen above). The artists met in a class taught by PEET at the 92nd Street Y and still meet weekly to make, fire, and glaze. After sharing photos with you earlier this week from Tomokazu Matsuyama’s (interviewed) current showcase at Harbour City in Hong Kong, we now have word of what comes next at the Tsim Sha Tsui hotspot. Openings: Sam Falls – “Light Over Time” @ MetroTech Center

The Los Angeles-based Sam Falls recently returned to Brooklyn for an outdoor project with the help of The Public Art Fund. Entitled Light Over Time, this exhibition held in the MetroTech Center courtyard clearly brings Fall’s installation magic into the outdoor setting. There are five sculptural works placed in select locations that invite the viewer to interact with the pieces. Florentijn Hofman’s Giant Rubber Duck (Los Angeles)

For fans in Los Angeles who looked at Hong Kong in envy as Florentijn Hofman’s giant “rubber” duck (covered) rolled into the harbor, your time has come. The whimsical inflatable childhood bath toy will be viewable at the Tall Ships Festival from August 20-24 starting today when the oversized duck (61 feet, 11 tons, about 85 feet wide and about 110 feet long) will lead the Grand Parade of Sail into San Pedro at 2 pm. Over the weekend, Tomokazu Matsuyama (interviewed) opened his new showcase (arranged by LeBasse Projects) at Harbour City in Hong Kong. Like other artists before him – KAWS (here), Yayoi Kusama, Yue Minjun (here), and Florentijn Hofman (here) – the New York based artist’s work dominated the main entrance and was also supported by a small exhibition of his work. Included are a 6.5 meter high stainless steel sculpture as well his contemporary Japanese imagery gracing the stairs, pillars, and adjacent billboards. Based off two of his complimentary paintings The Hermit & Migratory Soul, the two figures are already are in their protoype form.
