Openings: Adam Wallacavage – “Magic Mountain” @ Jonathan LeVine

Last month, AM stopped by the currently running show from Adam Wallacavage (interviewed) at the Jonathan LeVine Gallery in New York. Magic Mountain features the Philadelphia-based artist’s surreal mixed media sculptures and functional art objects as well as some pieces inspired and cast from vintage toys in his personal collection. Openings: Masakatsu Sashie – “Coacervate” @ Jonathan LeVine

Last month, we stopped by the Jonathan LeVine Gallery to check out a new solo show from Masakatsu Sashie (featured). Included in the exhibition entitled Coacervate (Latin for “to assemble together or cluster”) of course were different permutations of the fan-favorite globes created out of buildings, appliances, vending machines, and other urban man-made elements, but also seen was an impressive sculptural representation (seen above) of the Japanese artist’s signature imagery. Openings: KAWS @ Mary Boone Gallery (Chelsea)

Continuing his spate of strong showings recently, KAWS opened one of two shows over the weekend in New York at the Mary Boone Gallery in Chelsea. For this space, the Brooklyn-based artist created three new wooden sculptures, over eighteen feet high, in a style first seen in Switzerland for a showing for Basel week. These three monumental wooden companions were displayed along with three eight foot tondos. Michael Johansson – “Shades and Variables” @ Galleri Andersson/Sandström (Stockholm)

A couple month ago, the Stockholm location of Galleri Andersson/Sandström hosted new work from Swedish artist Michael Johansson (featured). Continuing his recent spate of showings in Europe, Shades and Variables featured works that he has become known form. Color coded Tetris-like cubes constructed perfectly from everyday items, an installation wall of tightly fitted components, and his play on toy kits filled the space. NYC based contemporary artist, Daniel Arsham is currently touring the globe, showing his unique artworks and concepts in some of the biggest and most influential capitals. Frieze London is one of the world’s leading art fairs and this year it took place from the 17th – 20th of October in Regent’s Park. For its 11th edition, the fair hosted 152 galleries which attracted around 70,000 during the six days of the opening of both Frieze London and Frieze Masters. Tag and Juice Gallery in Sao Paulo, Brazil, recently opened Preto e Branco (Black and White), a show by 2501 (Jacopo Ceccarelli) and Ozmo (Gionata Gesi) from Italy. On November 14th, Lehmann Maupin’s Hong Kong location will be opening a new show featuring the works of Do Ho Suh. For his first solo in the SAR, the Korean artist will be continuing his Specimen series of works where he recreates ethereal reproductions of various appliances from his New York apartment. Coinciding this week with the start of the FIAC art fair in Paris, Galerie LJ will opening Brendan Monroe’s (interviewed) latest solo show tomorrow (October 22). Entitled Turning, the exhibition will include a series of new paintings on paper and wood sculptures will continue the move towards abstraction in his recent work with imagery exploring his fascination with nature and its organic intricacies.
