This past weekend, MOCA presented Rebel, an exhibition conceived by James Franco and also including Douglas Gordon, Harmony Korine, Damon McCarthy, Paul McCarthy, Terry Richardson, Ed Ruscha, and Aaron Young. Showing at the JF Chen design space, the group effort is a deconstruction and reinterpretation of the legendary 1955 film Rebel Without A Cause which starred James Dean and Natalie Wood. On May 17th, the Philadelphia Art Alliance will host the opening reception for Adam Wallacavage’s (interviewed) Shiny Monsters. By hanging several new chandeliers within each gallery of the craft and design showspace, the eclectic sculptor will be introducing his hometown to his gothic-surreal lighting ornamentation. On Saturday night, Giant Robot 2 on Sawtelle St. in Los Angeles will be the stage for 34 of Eishi Takaoka’s new sculptures. The Japanese artist is known for his hand-carved wooden heads which are often painted and then placed atop empty glass medicine bottles. AM was fortunate enough to be able to trek down recently to Washington D.C. and catch Tomokazu Matsuyama’s (interviewed) solo exhibition at the Katzen Arts Center at the American University Museum. Aptly titled Thousand Regards, Matsu presented a balanced mix of works that varied from sculptures, paintings to installations to greet the guests visiting the museum. Currently showing at the Leeum Samsung Museum of Arts is native son Do Ho Suh’s Home Within Home. Bringing his signature sculptural works made from sheer fabric, the Korean artist explores the idea of his nomadic lifestyle lying in various major metropolitan areas of the world. With colorful and ethereal suspended structures greeting visitors when entering, the exhibition certainly makes an impression.
