Preview: Scott Radke – “Burlap” @ Thinkspace Gallery

Opening alongside Jen Lobo this Saturday night at Thinkspace, is the Ohio-based Scott Radke (interviewed). Featuring over two dozen pieces from the soulful sculptor, by far the most ever in one location, Burlap is a cant-miss show for fans of his beautifully grotesque works. As indicated by the title of the exhibition, many of these new sculptural pieces feature the incorporation of the specific fabric in the work, adding a nice new texture. Last night, Culver City gallery-goers were treated to a fascinating collection of brick sculptures from Shanghai and NY based Zhang Huan. There will be an interesting pairing of artists tomorrow night at the Shows & Tell Gallery in Toronto with a new exhibition entitled Double Rainbow Rainbow opening. Jen Stark, who is known for her intricately beautiful paper cuttings will be showing alongside NYC-based Maya Hayuk. Both have shown their mastery in working with colorful patterns – Stark in the three-dimensional and Hayuk in paintings. Basel Week Miami ’10 – Faurschou

Walking into Copenhagen and Beijing-based Faurschou’s booth at Art Basel Miami Beach was like walking into a carefully-curated, intimate museum show. With pieces by Ai Weiwei (including a half-million dollar sunflower pile that was created pre-Tate), Cai Guo-Qiang, Robert Rauschenberg, and Lucian Freud, everywhere you looked, you saw near-masterpieces. This past Saturday marked the opening of Barry McGee and Clare Rojas’ exhibition “Leave It Alone” & “Together At Last” (respectively) at the Bolinas Museum. The quaint community in northern California landed a double-stack of works featuring both iconic artists.
