Streets: David Ellis – “PST” (New York)

Versatile artist David Ellis recently turned the Pearl Street Triangle, a pedestrian plaza in Brooklyn, into a canvas for his a new mural. Entitled simply PST, the new piece which took six days to complete depicts an artist being held up by two large hands. The project funded by DUMBO developer Two Trees Management is a reference to the Ground Zero space filled with water while the uplifting hands show that we can pull ourselves up. Preview: London Pleasure Gardens

Starting tomorrow, June 30th, the London Pleasure Gardens will open their doors to the public in the heart of Olympic East London. We recently came across this stunning new installation from Tom Fruin in New York entitled Watertower. The NY-based artist’s sculptural creation, which is visible from Lower Manhattan, FDR Drive, and the Manhattan & Brooklyn Bridges, is built from salvaged plexiglass and steel throughout NYC sourced from a wide range of materials including old sign shops to closed-down artist studios and various warehouses. Shepard Fairey (featured) and the OBEY crew were recently in Paris for a new mural put together by the Mairie of 13th district, Mehdi from Galerie Itinerrance and Butterfly. The piece was part of a unfunded regeneration project of the area, called Street Art 13, which given has huge walls to many international artists. Streets: Spencer Tunick (Munich Opera Festival)

American photographer Spencer Tunick, known for organizing large-scale public nude photoshoots, has struck again – this time in Germany. The human installation created from 1,700 individuals marked the start of Munich’s 2012 opera season by gathering in formations recalling scenes from Richard Wagner’s opera Der Ring Des Nibelungen (The Ring of the Nibelung). For those who haven’t seen them yet, you have until June 30th to check out nine visually intriguing sculptures from Venezuelan-American artist Rafael Barrios in New York. Featured in the Park Avenue Malls between 50th and 68th Streets, the slender works play like an optical illusion and almost appear like digital effects when seen in photos. Featured as our Art Focus artist back in May (here), Sao Paulo-based street artist Eduardo Kobra has traveled to New York City for a mural project. The two-level public art piece features his remix of the famous Alfred Eisenstaedt photograph from the V-J celebrations in Times Square marking the end of U.S. hostilities with Japan. After a recent foray into the town of Grottaglie in Italy to kick off the FAME Festival with a series of impressive murals, Conor Harrington (interviewed) returns to the UK and promptly works on another large scale wall with his usual referencing of colonial imagery. The new work, created in his distinctive combination of abstract and photorealistic rendering, is located on Whitecross Street in London and is entitled Gonna Take My Problems to the United Nations. It looks like Phlegm, like many street artists, is taking advantage of the good weather to get up on as many walls as he can. Not long after a series of Waterways, he now has a couple more to add, this time in Bantry, West Cork (Ireland).
