One of the sad stories present in every street art fan’s mind while attending Basel Week Miami this year was the passing of Tony Goldman. Instrumental in revitalizing the Wynwood area with his support of murals and public art, there were multiple tributes to the man during this year’s event. Kenny Scharf, a perennial visitor to Miami, also painted a wall in remembrance of Goldman at the Tony Goldman Memorial Garden. Check out more photos below… Photo credit: Birdman. Our global summary of street work returns this week with a look around the world but heavily tilted towards Florida due to Basel Week Miami. Streets: ROA (Australia)

While in Australia recently for his solo showing at Backwoods Gallery (covered), the Belgium-based ROA not surprisingly brought his special form of portraiture to the streets down under. Included in these new murals were pieces painted at the Healesville Sanctuary in Melbourne, a non-profit conservation organization dedicated to fighting wildlife extinction. As usual, ROA chose species that are native to the area to render like the platypus and wombat. While roaming the streets during Basel Week Miami, AM came across our old friends from POW WOW, Meggs and Phibs working on a massive collaborative mural. Situated in the Wynwood Walls district, the piece featured Meggs’ phoenix and flames combined with Phibs characteristic patterns. Stop by to see it for yourself if you are in Miami. Continuing our survey of the streets in Miami, another interesting wall was collaboratively worked on by JR (featured) and André. The two French street artists combined their two styles – the signature photographic eye from JR and the stick figures of André – into a welcome addition to the Design District. Those who passed by the Overtown area of Miami while in the city for Basel Week Miami will no doubt have seen RISK’s deconstructive color washes on many of the buildings in the area. Using the area as his personal canvas, the LA-based writer has enlisted many of his friends for collaborative murals including Shepard Fairey in the piece seen above. Basel Week Miami ’12 / Streets: Herakut

AM will be checking out the PULSE art fair later today (one of the many satellite events during Basel Week Miami). Those planning to attend at some point this week will also see this huge Herakut mural soaring above the horizon across from the entrance of the fair. While AM has been running around at all the various fairs, we have also been monitoring the street activity, which continues to be strong during this year’s Basel Week Miami. One of the murals that caught our eye was the collaboration between Dabs Myla, Greg “Craola” Simkins, and Witnes in the Wynwood Walls area sponsored by LRG. Streets: Escif (Spain)

Sparked by the recent pardoning of policemen convicted of beating an innocent man in Spain, Escif as painted a new mural in Valencia entitled Swan Lake. Taking inspiration from a recent video of the incident captured on tape (seen below) and set to the music of Swan Lake, the Spanish street artist has taken the liberty to add tutus to the officers in action.
