Previews: ‘Rewire’ @ Gamma Transport Division (Edinburgh)

Art and music have long enjoyed a reciprocal relationship. Take the album cover for example. For years, musicians have found or commissioned visual artists to portray an aesthetic that resonates with the contents of the sleeve resulting in a complete aural and visual package. Gamma Proforma’s forthcoming exhibition and project Rewire flip reverses this process with a collection of artworks produced by visual artists forming the inspiration for a series of sonic interpretations of the artworks by musicians. A perfect fit for Gamma Proforma who […]

Rewind: Oct 13 – Nov 3

The end of this week brings another Rewind feature here on AM where we bring you art-related videos that may interest you. Leading things off is a closer at the recent mural painted by José Parlá at the James B. Hunt Library at the North Carolina State University. For those intrigued by the photos we shared with you back in July, make sure you watch the video below as the Brooklyn-based artist as he explains his thoughts behind the project making use of his urban calligraphic technique. Bumblebee […]

Previews: SheOne – “[S1]” @ Gamma Transport Division, Edinburgh

If you’re in or around Edinburgh, get ready for a treat as Gamma Proforma’s new gallery space Gamma Transport Division opens this Friday with their inaugural exhibition featuring pioneering British graffiti artist SheOne. [S1] features a series of brand new works from the Transcend / Wizard Kings writer, also known under his real name of James Choules. SheOne’s work sees him abstract traditional graffiti letterforms into a unique visual codified language synonymous throughout his outdoor and gallery work, and from the looks of the pictures seen here from the […]

The project was commissioned by the Motor Accident Commission road safety campaign in Australia and involved 17 people. Other worthy videos include: Wheatpaste.Doc – a Brazilian documentary about wheat paste. Pharrell Williams Interviews David Salle & KAWS. An interview with Sarah Joncas about her show at Last Rites Gallery. […]

Streets: SHEONE – Zion Street Project (Africa)

SHEONE has been a busy little bee since his Paris collabo with Nick Walker. Traveling down to West Africa, the legendary writer worked on the ZION STREET PROJECT created by Wide Open Walls. SHEONE hit up 14 different villages in Gambia and beautified the structures that housed the residents living in the Ballabu Conservation Area. We look forward to seeing more as this project’s momentum continues to grow. Until then, check out the beautiful abstractions in the wild after the jump. Photography by Larry Makasutu.

Streets: World Roundup (Feb 6 – Feb 12)

This week’s featured wall for our street art roundup from around the world is a sweet collaborative piece between Austrian artist Nychos and the German-based old school legend Flying Fortress. This mother bear mural was created when Mr. Fortress stopped by Vienna for a visit and if you are interested, you can see more footage in a video here. Other work worth your time to take a look at include Cranio (Brazil), Nick Walker x SheOne (Paris), Nychos x Flying Fortress (Austria), REVOK (Detroit), Hyuro […]

More photos by Ian Cox and Martha Cooper after the jump…

Openings: Crash & SheOne – “Pop Crime” @ Opus Art

Last Thursday saw the opening of “Pop Crime” at Opus Art in Newcastle, featuring the work of Crash (aka John Matos) and SheOne. Crash is a legendary graffiti writer based in Bronx, NY that has been working on canvas since the early 80s and has been putting his mark on the sides of subway cars and NY streets since the original rise of graffiti in the late 1970s. Remarkably, this is the first time that a body of work from Crash has been shown in […]
