Teasers: Hush – “Distant Portrait Series” @ Shooting Gallery NYC Pop-Up

We recently gave you a look at the latest batch of work that Hush (interviewed) has been working on. This series named “Distant Portraits” focuses more on the intent and emotions of his mysterious Geishas in the urban environment. Our question was where is it going to be shown at? We’re happy to announce that New York will be the next stop in Hush’s tour. After shows in Los Angeles and San Francisco, Hush will finally be landing in the Big Apple for a pop-up gallery show presented […]

Openings – Kris Kuksi and Christy Langer “Meticulous Engagements” @ Shooting Gallery

AM recently attended the opening for Kris Kuksi and Christy Langer’s “Meticulous Engagements” (previewed) at the Shooting Gallery in San Francisco. Langer, who first caught our eye at Basel last year and is pictured above, brought a nice mix of large and small resin sculptures, examining the violence and fragility of nature. Kuksi’s works were as impressive as always and though we took plenty of detail pictures, they really need to be seen in person to be believed.  “Meticulous Engagements” ends in two days, the […]

Studio Visits / Preview: Hush – “Passing Through” @ Shooting Gallery

Transatlantic traveling artist Hush (interviewed) is set to pick up another stamp in his passport and some frequent flyer points in a couple of weeks time when his latest solo show entitled “Passing Through” opens at San Francisco’s Shooting Gallery on May 1st. AM went over to his Newcastle studio space to check out the work in progress as he was almost about ready to crate and ship the work. The new body of work is set to signal a final farewell to his manga […]

Teaser: Hush – “Passing Through” @ Shooting Gallery

San Francisco is going to get another taste of Hush (interviewed) when his show at Shooting Gallery opens up May 1st. The latest solo “Passing Through” from the UK urban artist looks to be very sharp as we’ve seen some new direction with his latest “Looking West” style geisha that we showed you (here & here). Seen above is another new twist on his classic angel character called “Modern Angel” – looks a little edgier with a dissected feel… Check out the print (to be […]

Preview: Christy Langer – “Meticulous Engagements” @ Shooting Gallery

Sculptor Christy Langer sent AM an exclusive preview of a couple of her new pieces that will be featured in the upcoming “Meticulous Engagements” show coming soon to the Shooting Gallery. Showing with Kris Kuksi (featured), Langer’s resin, fiberglass and oil painted animals appear to be the perfect compliment to Kuksi’s minutia assemblages. Stay tuned for a preview from Kuksi as well as the show approaches. Check out the full preview after the jump.

Openings: Aaron Nagel – “Marks” @ Shooting Gallery

After 7 years in business, San Francisco’s Shooting Gallery celebrated their anniversary with a stellar solo show by Oakland based artist Aaron Nagel this past weekend. Entitled “Marks” (previewed), Aaron’s show features a bounty of breast-baring buxoms, many of whom have been impaled by arrows, carefully combining a controversial mix of religious iconography and contemporary portraiture, certain to leave a mark on the viewer. Surprisingly enough, Nagel is completely self taught and though his mastery of oils would lead you to assume otherwise, we here […]

Openings: Antistrot – “Solid Cold” @ Shooting Gallery

Antistrot is a Dutch collective consisting of six artists who met while in art school in the mid-90’s. AM was on hand to catch up with two of the members, Silas and Johan, as they put the finishing touches on the group’s latest show which opened last weekend in San Francisco at the Shooting Gallery. “Solid Cold” features close to two dozen new pieces from the group, each one made in a fully collaborative state with multiple artists working off and with each other at […]

Openings: Morgan Slade – “Fist of Fear, Touch of Death” @ Shooting Gallery

Morgan Slade opened his new show, “Fist of Fear, Touch of Death” last weekend at San Francisco’s Shooting Gallery. Featuring ten new large scale photographs, Morgan’s latest body of work is most striking and provided a great introduction of his work to the Bay Area. His subjects, faceless models donning football helmets, stormtrooper masks, and mascot heads, pose playfully though it’s their anonymity and resulting lack of true beauty that perhaps grants such freedoms as modern day morettas. After photographing his models, Slade hand-distresses and […]

Openings: Travis Louie – “Lifetime Companions” @ Shooting Gallery

Travis Louie (interviewed) opened his latest solo show, “Lifetime Companions” at the Shooting Gallery this past weekend. Consisting of nine new acrylic paintings, “Lifetime Companions” explores the relationships and origins of a cavalcade of Louie’s characters seen mostly through the eye of a wedding portraitist. With a narrative that delves deeper than any fans imagination could possibly muster, Travis closes out 2010 with an amazing show and one not to miss.  In addition, Louie surprised his San Francisco fans with eight preliminary sketches, including a […]

Openings: KMNDZ, C3, Akira @ Shooting Gallery

With the tireless and industrious energy of one of his own robot subjects, Johnny “KMNDZ” Rodriguez opened a new show, alongside C3 and Akira, last weekend at San Francisco’s Shooting Gallery.  Featuring a freshly painted mural and whole new body of work, this striking show depicts a foreboding future as viewed through the antiquated and dusty lens of a camera obscura.   While KMNDZ’s robots search for their humanity, you might find your own at the Shooting Gallery, show runs till November 13th. More pictures […]
