Currently on display at Honor Fraser Gallery is Rosson Crow’s third solo with the Culver City showspace. Entitled Madame Psychosis Holds a Séance, the new paintings and a short film explores the fictional world of Madame Psychosis, an aging showgirl obsessed with the assassination of John F. Kennedy. The Los Angeles-based artist hopes to shed light on the psychology of national identity shaped around moments of historical significance with the new work and has chosen an event that certainly has been etched into the American cultural consciousness. Discuss Rosson Crow […]

Previews: Ryan McGinley – “Fall” @ Team Gallery (Los Angeles)

After a look at the new work from Ryan McGinley for a showing at New York’s Team Gallery, it’s time to share what he has prepared at the gallery’s sister location in Venice, California. Collectively entitled Fall, the photographs to be displayed starting on November 15th  are meant to be enjoyed in conjunction with the Winter body of work in NYC. The striking images are a continuation of the New York-based artist’s series of road trip pieces and feature the stark human form juxtaposed against Autumn’s palette. […]

Openings: Tristan Eaton – “Legacy” @ Subliminal Projects

Over the weekend, Subliminal Projects in Los Angeles held the opening reception for Tristan Eaton’s new show (presented by Library Street Collective). Legacy is the locally-based artist’s first solo exhibition in the area in almost a decade, a fact not lost on the crowds that lined up to check out the new work and to show their support. The new paintings feature Eaton’s characteristic patchwork style with this subject matter quite personal this time around. as they were inspired by audio interviews conducted by him of nearly a dozen people who played a pivotal […]

Openings: Barry McGee – “China Boo” @ Ratio 3

After an interval of seven years, Barry McGee is back at Ratio 3 in San Francisco and this time he brought along 50 of his friends to join him. This particular show had a few surprises and whole lot of what we love about the Bay Area legend such as painted signs, geometric paintings, customized surfboards, painted bottles, sketches, and photography. The main gallery hosted the man known as Twist’s work with the vacant store next door converted to the L. Quan – Check Cashing & Healing Arts Centre for all […]

We have been following Rodrigo Branco for a while now, and after seeing him paint a lovely portrait mural in the Swiss alps recently (covered), it’s great to see him having a solo show at Homegrown Galeria in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Opened on 8th of October, Efígie (effigy) includes seven signature portrait pieces created for this show using mixed mediums such a acrylic and spray paint on canvas. This series is an ode to times passed when portraits and busts represented the soul of the person. Both expressive and almost abstract […]
