Previews: Kent Williams – “Bones With Flesh” @ EVOKE Contemporary

Following up on a show at EVOKE Contemporary back in 2013 (covered), Kent Williams will be opening another solo tonight (September 25th) at the New Mexico showpace. Entitled Bones With Flesh, the new body of work includes some exquisite oil painting as well as some looser studies on paper. The subject matter centers on the Los Angeles-based artist’s mastery of the human form but also superimposed over these skills are more abstract elements throughout the composition. Take a look at more preview images below… Discuss Kent Williams here.

Previews: Soey Milk – “PIDA” @ Hashimoto Contemporary

Starting from opening night on October 1st, Hashimoto Contemporary in San Francisco will have new works from Soey Milk on display, oil paintings and graphite drawings. The Korean term “PIDA / 피다” (also the title of her show) means to blossom or to become something else, something that applies to the Los Angeles-based painter’s continued development in technique and artistic vision. Also new in the last year has been her experimentation with adding embedded objects into her art like crushed flower pedals or earth to go along […]

Previews: Matt Dangler – “Sanctify” @ Copro Gallery

On October 10th, Matt Dangler (interviewed) will be opening a new solo at Copro Gallery, the site of his showing in Los Angeles in 2012 (covered). Entitled Sanctify, the title is perhaps a hint at some of the heavier topics that the gifted painter will be exploring with his surreal vision. An example of what to expect can be seen in the piece above, The Promised Land, as well as in the preview images below. Discuss Matt Dangler here.

Upcoming: Daniel Arsham @ YoungArts (Miami)

Tomorrow (September 24), as part of YoungArts Awareness Day, sculptor Daniel Arsham has prepared a special interactive event in Miami. Similar to his current exhibition in Hong Kong (covered), the Brooklyn-based artist will have an installation of his “future relics” on display, with nearly 2,000 objects made of chalk that visitors can use to draw or write their impressions of the future. More info about the event and an opportunity to purchase tickets here. Discuss Daniel Arsham here.

Upcoming / Videos: Mel Kadel – “Sky’s Eyes” @ Slow Culture

On October 2nd, Slow Culture in Los Angeles will be presenting new works from Mel Kadel in a show entitled Sky’s Eyes. Known for her folk art inspired paintings featuring her recognizable female characters along with what must be penchant for patterns, the American artist has prepared at least 100 new pieces, which you can see stacked up in the video below. Discuss Mel Kadel here.

Openings: Shepard Fairey – “On Our Hands” @ Jacob Lewis Gallery / Pace Prints

It’s hard to believe that it’s been 5 years since since street artist, activist and most recently outlaw (according to the mayor of Detroit), Shepard Fairey has ‘formally’ had a solo show in New York City. But as you likely know (if you are reading this), the American artist doesn’t stand still for very long. Let’s not kid ourselves with the math equation here, the Los Angeles-based artist and his posse still go as hard as any, 26+ years in the game. He recently finished up his second […]

Upcoming: Aaron Li-Hill x Soundwall Installation (New York)

Thursday night (6-9pm) in New York, Aaron Li-Hill (interviewed) will be unveiling a new installation at Soundwall entitled Resonance. Featuring the signature kinetic energy and geometric lines seen in the Brooklyn-based artist’s work (example above), the new piece is certainly something you want to see in person. Arranged by LeBasse Projects, the event will also see Li-Hill releasing a special print. RSVP here if you are interested in attending. Discuss Aaron Li-Hill here.

Openings: Nick Walker – “Entropy” @ Above Second (Hong Kong)

Last week, Nick Walker (interviewed) opened his new show at Above Second Gallery entitled Entropy. If in September, we brought you a look while the Bristol-based street artist was creating new body of work in his studio, so we come full circle now with a look at the artwork hanging in the Hong Kong showspace. Included are his new series of number pieces as well as stencils inspired by the local urban landscape. Discuss Nick Walker here.

Streets: Os Gemeos (Lithuania)

The murals are coming fast and furious now that the twins are on a roll. Hot on the heels of work in New York, Naestved, and Minsk, Os Gemeos have now moved on to Lithuania for their latest project. For the third Vilnius Street Art Festival, the legendary duo from Brazil painted one of their classic yellow characters climbing out of a wall, smartly leaving some of the in situ graffiti in place on the wall. The piece is a also tribute to their grandfather, who is […]

Showing: “Invisible College” @ Fort Wayne Museum of Art

With this being the last week of the Invisible College group exhibition at the Fort Wayne Museum of Art, now would be a good time for a recap. Co-curated by Andrew and Shawn Hosner of Los Angeles’ Thinkspace Gallery and Josef Zimmerman from the museum, the title references the fact that many of the artists on the roster didn’t take a traditional art education path to where their careers are now. The show will featured murals and installations from Andrew Schoultz, Brett Amory, Cyrcle, Mark Dean Veca, and Troy Lovegates as well as original works from Adam Caldwell, Adrian Falkner, Alex Yanes, Allison Sommers, Amanda Joseph, Andrew Hem, Brian M.
