LA Art Show ’15: Littletopia

On the 5th of February, Rex Romae will open a London solo by the versatile and prolific artist, Gonzalo Borondo. Last week, AM attended the LA Art Show to see what the fair had to offer collectors in Los Angeles. Previews: Spazuk – “Récidive” @ Galerie C.O.A

On the 26th of January, Galerie C.O.A in Montral will be opening Récidive, a solo show by the “fire painter” Spazuk. The distinctive technique he uses is called fumage, which allows him to use the flame of a candle or torch as a “paintbrush” to create his paintings with trails of soot. He later manipulates these trails by using various needles, razors, and makeshift bird feather pens, which result in incredibly detailed black and white works on canvas, panel or paper. Following the success of the 2014 exhibition Futurismo Ancestral: An Offering to Peru by Sixe Paredes (covered), the collaborative arts organization Approved by Pablo curated a new exhibition entitled Mapping The City in London, running until 15 February. Over 50 internationally recognized artists from the street art and graffiti scene including took over the New Wing of Somerset House to share their knowledge of each city’s secrets and urban landscape through a variety of media from illustrations, paintings, sculptures, installations and videos. Openings: Mark Jenkins – “Moment of Impact” @ Lazarides Rathbone

Last week, Mark Jenkins (interviewed) premiered his debut solo show with Lazarides Rathbone entitled Moment of Impact. For his fans in London, the American artist has assembled a selection of provocative mixed media canvases and hyper-realist sculptures. Some pieces like his masked full-size figures are direct translations of his street interventions while others are produced for the gallery setting like the leg which seems to be bursting through a canvas or arms committing seppuku. From candlelit backrooms to small forest clearings, Incantation sees Roq la Rue Conjuring up a group show based on ritual and mysticism. Occultism is often seen as heretical to mainstream society, but the beliefs and practices are centuries old and firmly rooted in nature and our surroundings.
