Upcoming: Greg “Craola” Simkins @ Merry Karnowsky Gallery

On May 17th, the Merry Karnowsky Gallery in Los Angelels will be presenting a new body of work from Greg Simkins (featured). Also known as Craola to his fans, the locally-based artist will be returning to the showspace (see 2012 & 2013) with a fresh batch of paintings featuring his surreal cast of animal characters. Those in the area might want to check out a piece from Simkins at the Gallery 1988 10 year anniversary show opening on April 11 in the meantime. Photo credit: Brent Broza. Discuss Greg Simkins here.

Openings: Zed 1 – “Frutti della Mente” @ Galo Art Gallery

Italian artist Zed 1 recently opened a solo show at the Galo Art Gallery in Turin, Italy, that will be on view until 19th of April. The artist whose recognizable murals adorn walls from Amsterdam to NYC prepared a whole new body of work for Frutti Della Mente (Fruits of the Mind). Using found objects, painting on old windows, doors, scrap wood, and even collage of old posters, the composition and color palette is often defined by the shape, color or texture of the surface he is working […]

Upcoming: Jeremy Fish – “Hunting Trophies” @ Mark Moore Gallery

On April 5th, the Mark Moore Gallery in Los Angeles will be presenting new works from Jeremy Fish (featured). Hunting Trophies will mark the return of the Bay Area-based artist at the space (see 2011) and will feature an immersive installation (part of which can be seen above) as well as new paintings that often include three-dimensional elements. For this show, Fish will be questioning our perception of value in our society with pieces that could fit on a cabin wall like a trophy piece, with imagery dealing with […]

Openings: “Infusion” @ Roq La Rue

Infusion at Roq la Rue opened on Thursday, March 6th to a packed audience. The show’s goal was to infuse the gallery with talent that had not been seen in the gallery previously.  Almost all of the artists in the show are new to the gallery and they didn’t take the opportunity lightly. From the life size Wedding Party by Rose Freymuth-Frazier, the grotesquely beautiful Blue Room by Jeff Jacobson (seen above), and Zachari Logan’s Blue Man 2, amazing levels of detail were brought, all with […]

Showing: JR @ Museum Frieder Burda

French photographer and street artist JR (interviewed) currently has a show at Museum Frieder Burda in Baden-Baden, Germany. The retrospective features shots of his public works as well as the black and-white photographs used for the street installations from a wide range of projects ranging from FACE 2 FACE to THE WRINKLES OF THE CITY to WOMEN ARE HEROES. Of course, visitors can have their portraits taken in a photo booth for the TED winning artist’s INSIDE OUT project. Naturally, while he was in town, JR found time to get some works […]

Openings: Logan Hicks – “Love Never Saved Anything” @ PMM Art Projects (Popup)

Last week, during Armory Week, Brooklyn-based artist Logan Hicks held a fresh exhibition at PMM Art Projects‘ pop-up location on NYC’s Lower East Side. Entitled Love Never Saved Anything, Hicks’ new show seems to be exploring underwater elements as the subject matter, with much success. He has brought another dimension of detail and color in this body of work, which takes his signature stencil technique to a whole new level. Another surprise in the exhibition is the second level of the gallery, which showcases Hicks’ […]

Openings: Mel Kadel – “Tied Up” @ Merry Karnowsky Gallery

We last caught up with Mel Kadel back in 2012 when she presented a solo show at the Merry Karnowsky Gallery in Los Angeles. Last weekend, her works returned to the same space for another exhibition entitled Tied Up,  opening on the same night as Andrew Hem’s show. In her new paintings, Kadel continues to explore, along with her recognizable character, a folksy world created by patterns and repetitive motifs. This time around, the pieces created on hand-stained paper revolve around the notion referenced to […]

Studio Visits: Swoon – VNA “NYC Takeover 2.0” @ Supra NYC

During January, our friends at Very Near Almost (VNA) invited us to come along on a visit to Swoon (interviewed) Brooklyn studio while they conducted an intimate photo shoot for their 25th issue. Swoon and her crew graciously opened up their sun-drenched Red Hook space and allowed us to watch them work on some upcoming projects. Typically, Swoon’s creative process involves a multitude of techniques, from hand cut lino blocks to drawings, delicate hand cut patterns to intricately sown finishings. There isn’t a detail that isn’t […]
