Coming up on June 12th, Unit 44 will be presenting Into The Dark, a group exhibition in Newcastle’s Victoria Tunnel (ala Lazarides’ subterranean Hell’s Half Acre & Minotaur events). Openings: Augustine Kofie – “California Soul” @ Galerie OpenSpace

Over the weekend, Augustine Kofie’s showing opened in Paris at Galerie OpenSpace, his first true solo outside of the States. California Soul brought his post-graffiti aesthetic to his fans in France featuring a layering of sunny colors, linear and grid-like elements that speak to architectural forms, and themes of “a golden state of mind, overcast optimism, southlandishness and the complexities of the good life in the rural paradise that he saw bulldozed into urban submission.” Take a look at the opening photos below… Photo credit: Fatina […]

Showing: Brendan Monroe – “Melting Into The Floor” @ Richard Heller Gallery

Earlier this month, Brendan Monroe (interviewed) opened his new solo show at the Richard Heller Gallery in Los Angeles. Entitled Melting Into the Floor, the new body of work includes paintings on paper and a number of sculptures in wood. Drawing from the name of the show, many of the pieces explore the transformation between liquids, gases, and solids – especially the crossing points at which the alteration occurs. Upcoming: Faile – “Les BALLETS de FAILE” @ Lincoln Center (Part II)

Tonight (May 29th) marks the return of Faile’s Les BALLETS de FAILE to the New York City Ballet at the Lincoln Center with all new works on display. In place of the epic tower installation for the first showing (covered) will be a series of prayer wheels from the Brooklyn duo as well as new paintings. Michael Johansson – “Familiar Abstractions” @ Vigeland-Museet

Last week, we brought a look inside the studio of Michael Johansson in Malmø where he was busy preparing for his show at the Vigeland-Museet in Oslo, Norway. We now have some photos of the recently closes said exhibition, Familiar Abstractions, which features the tetris-like created cubes made from everyday objects that the Swedish artist is known for. Along with these color-coded assemblages, Johansson also filled in some doorways in with some installation work as well as displayed some grid-like sculptural pieces from rack-like materials. A couple weekends ago, the Martha Otero Gallery presented all new works from Pedro Matos in his first Los Angeles solo exhibition. Entitled Building Castles Made of Sand, the showing featured a new series of oil paintings on canvas and azulejo panels, a traditional Portuguese medium of hand-painted, tin-glazed, ceramic tile work. Continuing to draw from his experience of working on the streets of Lisbon, Matos weaves layers, textures, patterns, figurative subjects, and typography into his pieces. Earlier today in Italy, illustrator, artist, and designer, Parra opened his solo show Il Senso di Colpa (The Guilt) at Galleria Patricia Armocida. In accordance with the title of his show, the artist focused this body of work on the feeling of guilt and similar emotions that are often limiting and troubling for many of us. Through a series of black and white drawings, watercolors, and his signature red & blue acrylic paintings, the Dutch artist showed situations and reactions that are somehow connected with feelings of guilt and self-judgement. Former graffiti artist and self-taught photographer Nils Müller opened his solo show at Ruttkowski;68 Gallery in Cologne, Germany, last Friday, the 24th of June. The show followed up his recently released book Vandals and it was the official release of the limited edition of the book as well(we are still giving away one copy of these HERE). Last night, ArtRebels in Copenhagen hosted an opening In/Between, solo exhibition from Hyuro, her first in the Danish capital. The showing from the Argentinean artist known for her street murals, often highlighting the female condition, included nineteen watercolor and ink pieces.
