Art Focus: Fabien Mérelle

Last month at Art Stage Singapore (covered), our attention was drawn to photos of this exquisite sculpture from French artist Fabien Mérelle shown at the Edouard Malingue Gallery booth). The piece entitled Pentateuque features a man bearing the weight of the world on his shoulders (in the form of an elephant), a translation of a drawing by the same artist into a three-dimensional form. Preview: Tim Doyle – “UnReal Estate II” @ Spoke Art

Tomorrow night (February 7th), Spoke Art will again be the site of a solo show from Tim Doyle in San Francisco. The Austin-based illustrator and screen printer will once again be reprising his re-interpretations of famous TV show locations with a new body of work entitled UnReal Estate II (see part I from 2012 here). Clever takes on this unique subject matter include renderings of familiar places from shows like Futurama, Arrested Development, Firefly, The Sopranos, Deadwood, The Simpsons, and more…

Currently in Japan, Geoff McFetridge has renewed his collaboration with Heath Ceramics for a show at Playmountain. My Head Disappears When My Hands Are Thinking not only features the Los Angeles-based artist’s minimalistic paintings, but also his specially designed ceramic items (also seen 2011 in LA). This Thursday night (February 7th) in Mexico City, the artist known as Rostarr (featured) will be opening a solo show at Anonymous Gallery. Otherwise known as Romon Kimin Yang, the New York-based painter will be bringing with him all new works collectively entitled Turbo Arena, all featuring his signature blend of iconography, calligraphy, and graphics. Openings: Victor Castillo – “Under Heavy Measures” @ Merry Karnowsky Gallery

On Saturday night, the Merry Karnowsky Gallery welcomed in Victor Castillo for his new solo show entitled Under Heavy Measures. The new body of work included pieces on paper and canvas, sketches, and some sculptures that look like they came straight out of his paintings including the LA-based artist’s signature red sausage noses (see video). Attendees were treated to vivid and troubled imagery juxtaposing the innocence of children and an illustrative style with dark subject matter fraught with ominous creatures, political overtones, and violence. Later this month, the ARCOMadrid fair will see Eli Ridgeway display all new works from Matthew Palladino (interviewed) at their booth. The SF-based gallery recently hosted Palladino’s solo show in 2012 (covered) as well as repped him at the Texas Contemporary Art Fair in 2011 (covered), so they are well aware of the hypnotic quality of the NY-based painter’s work as well as his intriguing plays on perspective. AM recently stopped by San Francisco to visit Guerrero Gallery and caught the setup by Remio & Tim Diet as they prepared for their opening this Saturday. First up is Remio, known as a great writer around the world (part of both Barry McGee’s DFW/THR and Os Gemeos’ VLOK crew), bringing a impactful show entitled Man In Transition. The Metro Gallery in Melbourne very recently hosted the opening reception for Dabs Myla’s latest solo show – All Good Things… Along with paintings featuring the whimsical cartoonish characters which are often seen in their outdoor work, the duo also transformed the space with wall murals and installations (a regular occurrence for those familiar with their exhibitions). Opening tonight (February 1st) in San Francisco at the 111 Minna Gallery will be a new showing from David Choong Lee. We last witnessed a large body of work (covered) from the SF-based artist back in 2010 in Los Angeles, and in comparison, this new exhibition Organic Updates will also feature more clusters and wall installations created with elements of graffiti, collage, and painting.
