Upcoming: Frank Gonzales – “Habitat” @ Beals & Abbate

Coming up next month, the Beals & Abbate Gallery in New Mexico will be hosting a solo exhibition from Frank Gonzales. Last year around the same time, the New York-based artist also presented a selection of his paintings of beautifully rendered scenes of nature, infused with an abstract overlays. From these preview images, it looks like this year will be no different when Habitat opens on Friday, September 28th. Discuss Frank Gonzales here.

Openings: Crazy 4 Cult – Gallery 1988 (NYC)

Last week, AM took a walk down memory lane as the annual Crazy 4 Cult opened its doors to the legions of fans of cult movies and art, especially those who wanted one of the prints from Olly Moss (seen above) based off the film Léon: The Professional. Hosted as usual by Gallery 1988, this year’s showing (the sixth one) was its first time in New York and was as popular as always. Upcoming: Jeremy Geddes @ Jonathan LeVine Gallery

Showing alongside long time friend and collaborator Ashley Wood, the Australia-based Jeremy Geddes (interviewed) will be coming stateside for one of the most highly anticipated shows of the year. When the exhibition opens, the piece seen above entitled Miserere 1 depicting what seems to be some sort of spaceship or satellite will be on display as part of a series of ten paintings. Even more exciting will be the larger paintings like A Perfect Vacuum that will greet fans who will be visiting the New York showspace come October. […]

Showing: Matt Small – “Seen and Heard” @ Blackall Studios

Last week, UK-based painter Matt Small (interviewed) opened a new solo show at  Lackall Studios in London with a new body of work derived from his experiences while working on a youth empowerment project. Entitled Seen and Heard, the exhibition consisted of a series of portraits rendered in Small’s characteristic swirl of colors and attempts to bring a positive light to a subgroup of society that is often viewed negatively. Streets: Outside Lands (Part I) – Skinner (San Francisco)

Not only did the Outside Lands festival in San Francisco feature a great lineup of musicians (Neil Young, Santigold, Stevie Wonder, Jack White, and more), a select group of artists were also invited in to paint some murals. For the 5th annual event, Juxtapoz invited in Skinner, Dabs Myla, Curve, Brett Amory, Chez, Apex, Marcos LaFarga, Pastime, Satyr, Diet, Sam Flores, Nate Van Dyke and Eos Montana to paint in and around the festival grounds. Showing: Candice Tripp – “Petit Mal @ Black Rat Gallery

Last month, London was treated to a new solo showing from Candice Tripp (interviewed) at Black Rat Projects entitled Petit Mal. The new paintings are some of her best and darkest yet, featuring her masked adolescents participating in bizarre scenarios as if from a bad nightmare. Coming up on September 13th, the Lehmann Maupin Gallery in New York will be welcoming Japanese artist Mr. in for a new solo show entitled Metamorphosis – Give Me Your Wings. Nicola Verlato – “Zero Gravity” @ Merry Karnowsky

Over the weekend, the Merry Karnowsky Gallery in Los Angeles welcomed local artist Nicola Verlato and his new paintings into their showspace with an opening reception. The new works collectively entitled Zero Gravity are beautiful executed with his characters and objects suspended in midair as if frozen in time.
