Upcoming: RETNA @ Michael Kohn Gallery

Coming up in September, the Michael Kohn Gallery in Los Angeles will be unveiling new paintings and works on paper as well as site-specific installations from RETNA (featured). We last saw the MSK-affiliated writer back in March when he painted a mural at the famed Bowery and Houston location in New York and look forward to the continued evolution of his street hieroglyphics and urban calligraphy. Discuss RETNA here.

Upcoming: Audrey Kawasaki @ Jonathan LeVine

Coming up on September 8th, Audrey Kawasaki (interviewed) will be opening her latest exhibition at the Jonathan LeVine Gallery, site of her big solo in New York at the end of 2009. As a teaser, here is a photo she posted to her Instagram showing some glimpses of her now completed new body of work. If this is not enough to add this show to your calendar, consider for a moment that Jeff Soto and Judith Supine are also opening new shows at the gallery on the […]

Openings: Os Gemeos @ ICA Boston

Last week, AM took a road trip up to the ICA Boston to catch the opening week of Os Gemeos’ first ever solo museum exhibition in the U.S. The twins Otávio & Gustavo Pandolfo (aka Os Gemeos) took Beantown by storm with not only a mind blowing mural at Dewey Square’s MassDot building, but also took over two of the ICA’s exhibition rooms with a great selection of art including paintings and sculptural work. Curated by Pedro Alonzo (who also curated Shepard Fairey’s retrospective), this […]

Streets: Walk & Talk Festival (Part I) – Vhils

After hitting up Komafest in Norway with new mural on a novel new medium – wood – Vhils has headed over to Azores, Portugal for the Walk & Talk Festival. This will be the second trip for the Lisbon-based street artist as he gifted the archipelago with several pieces last year if you remember. This time around, he made his mark on an abandoned tower  – you can’t get better placement than that. Look for more photos soon as Liqen, Mark Jenkins, Remed and more are still […]

Openings: “MiXTAPE LA” @ Lebasse Projects (Chinatown)

Last night, the Chinatown location of LeBasse Projects hosted Mixtape Los Angeles, a group show curated by by Jessicka Adams and Brian Wakil of Dark Dark Science with part of the proceeds going to Downtown Dog Rescue and Stray Cat Alliance. Twenty four artists created pieces that explored “the effect of music on the process of creation” including Camille Rose Garcia, Elizabeth McGrath, Gary Baseman, Marion Peck, Mark Ryden, Matthew Bone, Melissa Haslam, Tara McPherson, Tim Biskup and more. Check out this sweet dissected Abe Lincoln piece from Ryden […]

Preview: Travis Louie – “Spirits” @ Stranger Factory

Those in Albuquerque, New Mexico tonight need to head over to Stranger Factory to check out Travis Louie’s (interviewed) newest solo show. Entitled Spirits, the new body of work features a menagerie of strange and wonderful creatures including some of the supernatural persuasion. In particular, we love the piece above – The Spirit of the Cyclo-Sasquatch – the NY-based painter’s interpretation of the mythical creature based loosely on the Patterson footage. Also, for those artists out there, Travis will be offering a very special, small-group rendering […]

Streets: Shepard Fairey (Denver)

Tomorrow night (August 3rd) in Denver, the Black Book Gallery will host a three person show from Shepard Fairey, Evan Hecox, and Jim Houser. The Mile-High City last saw Shep’s work at Manifest Hope during the 2008 Democratic National Convention, but if the art community has forgotten, the OBEY crew has been up and about putting up reminders with stickers, stencils and wheat pastes. Discuss Shepard Fairey here.

Futura x Hennessy Launch Party (Los Angeles)

Last night, Hennessy held the Los Angeles premiere (see NY launch here) of the VS cognac bottle designed by Futura at an exclusive launch party held at the Milk Studios in Hollywood. The special bottle is a continuation of the brand’s collaboration with high profile artists (see KAWS) and it seemed that no expense was spared with Diplo and Santigold on hand to entertain the crowd. Of particular interest to fans of the graffiti legend though were various originals on display as well as a live painting session. Also on hand […]

After a short hiatus, the David B.
