Earlier this month, Lazarides hosted the opening of Jonathan Yeo’s solo exhibition You’re Only Young Twice. The new paintings focused on the phenomena of plastic surgery with imagery of patients being marked preoperatively, scenes from the operation, as well as before and after comparison shots. Rendered beautifully in photorealistic and abstract techniques, the new body of work once again shows off the technical skills as well as wit of the British artist. Showing: Swoon – “Murmuration” @ Black Rat Projects

Earlier this month, Swoon’s (interviewed) first London solo exhibition opened up at the Black Rat Projects. She has spent three long weeks transforming the gallery space with sculptural paper installations that she collectively entitled Mumuration. The project utilized imagery from much of her previous work including her Art in the Streets install at the MOCA, Thalassa at the NOMA, Anthropocene Extinction at the Boston (ICA). This past Saturday, the Known Gallery teamed up with Modern Multiples, a LA-based print studio and one of the powerhouses in this industry, for one a one week pop-up show in which an incredible collection of prints were on display and available for purchase just in time for the holidays. Openings: Silvia Ji – “Gilded Roses”

This past weekend, the Corey Helford Gallery presented the latest solo show by the painter Sylvia Ji (interviewed). Titled Gilded Roses, the exhibition featured a collection of work that was accentuated by the artist’s penchant for intricate details as well as her use of a colorful palette. The night featured twelve paintings, all which reference a Victorian-like quality mixed with a slightly surreal tone. Earlier this month, the Roq La Rue hosted the third rendition of the Lush Life group show. Basel Week Miami ’11: Jason Shawn Alexander – “Undertow” @ 101/exhibit

Among the abundance of standalone exhibitions that AM attended during Art Basel Week Miami, one that stood out was Jason Shawn Alexander’s showing at 101/exhibit. Undertow came highly recommended by our friends at Hi-Fructose, and when we made it to the opening we could see why. The LA-based artist’s figurative work was large-scale, gritty, full of emotion & raw energy, and is certainly something you should check out if you are in the area through February 8th. A couple weeks ago, the husband and wife duo known as Kozyndan opened their newest solo show at the Bold Hype Gallery in New York. Entitled Their Bones Are Coral Made, the new work blended their two loves – the ocean & all things aquatic and the risque. After reporting on some in-progress photos of an two-sided epic mural by Andrew Schoultz for Primary Flight in Miami, we head back to get some completed shots. To celebrate the opening of his Saraab (mirage) exhibition a couple weeks ago at the Arab Museum of Modern Art (Mathaf) in Qatar, Chinese artist Cai Guo-Qiang put on his largest explosive performance of the last three years. Using perfectly timed microchip-controlled explosions, the renowned contemporary artist transformed the desert landscape and sky into his canvas with some beautifully orchestrated smoke and fire designs. This Saturday, December 17th, Sylvia Ji (interviewed) will be transporting her fans to another time and place when she opens Gilded Roses at the Corey Helford Gallery in Los Angeles.
